What is the best Windows APRS Client?
« on: October 05, 2019, 05:38:14 AM »

Hi,

I'm using DireWolf to handle APRS DSP and protocol. I need a Windows application to plot APRS data on a map.

I've looked for software, but all that I've found is very old. What's the best software to run on Windows 10 for APRS?

Thanks,
John

The October 2019 edition of QST has a nice article by WB0VGI that details the deployment of Direwolf. He uses Xastir on an RPi to display station locations. I know - not Windows - but the RPi is so inexpensive it is worth considering.

I like Xastir.  Been using it since Red Hat 6 or 7.

I prefer hardware modems.  Every time I've tried the software modem emulators, I run into issues.

John,

I’ve been using aprsis32 under Win 10 very effectively. And, with AGWE, operating an iGate using a software TNC without issue. Depending on your needs, QST had a nice feature article on PinPointAPRS for Windows, too.

APRSIS32 is a much nicer interface. I use Xastir a lot also but only because the particular project (Raspberry Pi based) requires it. It is clunky at best in terms of maps and other features. It has some great features that other software doesn't and that's why we use it for the project. APRSIS32 has a ton of cool features. PinpointAPRS looks cool too but crashes on my Win10 system. It may be a .Net thing or something. I haven't researched it.

I realize this thread is a year old but relevant still.  I recently (as in several days) started using PinPoint with Windows 7, kpc3+ (rs232) and Yeasu FT897.   I find it is very easy to operate.
Once I got around the RS232 to USB interface the KPC3+ works just like it always did.  What software did you end up using and are you stil active?
