Done with Ebay.
« on: October 20, 2020, 06:23:02 AM »

Just got screwed out of $28 in shipping back to China, and Ebay refuses to make it right.

Lesson to be learned.  NEVER pay return shipping for any item.  It's the seller's obligation to pay that, and if you do pay, you'll end up eating it.

And NEVER trust Chinese vendors.  They too often sell junk, defects, and returned items, betting that Americans will toss it into the bucket, rather than fight to return it.

Buy American!!!!!

you CAN but American on Ebay!
Ebay and Chinese vendors are not synonymous.

If you have any questions, you can contact the vendor before making the purchase.
If they are evasive in their answers , that's a red flag.
If you want to get to the answer quickly with a a Chinese vendor, send the question in a yes/no format.
Then there is no room for evading the question or "misinterpretation".
If they don't answer, move on.

If a seller pays return shipping it is their choice. Generally that is not the case regardless of where they are.

Yes...generally it will state in the ad if free returns are offered. That's why you need to really look over the entire ad before purchasing. Or ask if you have doubts.

Excellent advise!

Much, if not most, "American" products are made in China or contain Chinese parts.

I certainly agree about Chinese cabbage-family varieties, especially gai lan. It is usually
called "Chinese broccoli" but there are many other varieties which are also excellent.

Perhaps best is home-grown broccoli, of whatever variety. Much better than anything from the supermarket or farmers' market.

It's only the sellers obligation to pay for return shipping if they state that the return will be processed for free and that they will pay return shipping.

Buying American doesn't mean squat.  I bought a TS850 from a scammer on qrz.  He got scammed as well, figured he would just send it on down the line.  I used paypal to pay him.

I ended up having to pay for return shipping just to get my refund.  And then I saw it posted on another well known ham classified site a couple days later.

AE1CT had his PayPal killed because of shady deals.  So he was using a friend in Florida, ex law enforcement officer, to process paypal for him.  Felt bad about the guy in Florida, he seemed oblivious to the problems his "friend" was involved in.

Lesson learned.  If you expect free shipping on a return, get it in writing.  Even if PayPal or Ebay find in your favor, you still have to get the item back to the point of origin unless they state in the ad free return shipping.  Free returns just means there is no restocking fee or otherwise.

Not sure what EBay is supposed to make right here.

Yes.  Buy American.  Made from foreign and domestic parts.  I deal with the "Buy American" act almost every single day in my job.  Most American's can't afford to purchase American made products.  Sad, but true.  Buy American act compliant products are about 30 to 300 pct more than imports.

I sell a lot of componenets on Ebay. I also buy a lot of stuff there. I have never personally gotten burned.

I have had a couple folks see a photo with multiple items in the photo and even though the description clearly states that the items were being sold individually, they thought they would use the photo as a means to get all the items for the individual price.

I have ordered lab glassware from China. A Soxhlet Extractor for capsaicin extraction from peppers and distillation apparatus. It's pretty delicate stuff but I figured I'd take my chances. Everything came in fine but one piece was broken (the condenser). I let the seller know what happened and they had a replacement part out to me faster than the first ones came.

Not everyone is a dirt bag, but they are out there. I try to deal with folks who have over 500 sales with 100% approval. It ain't a perfect system, but it works for me.

All things are not what they seem on Ebay.
I just had a strange experience buying from a vendor who reports his address as woodside ny. I'm only 60 miles away. I order the item , he generates a ship label ( to make Ebay happy) , then sits on it for over two weeks.
I wrote to him-no response until a few days before it got it, saying it will delivered soon.

When I got the IC , it appeared to be a Chinese knock-off of the part I ordered.
I suspect he just doing a forwarding service for a Chinese vendor.

He maintains a 96.5% rating because he takes returns and pays the shipping.  I'm wondering if I should leave negative feedback.
I did report him to Ebay as a possible "front".
Ok so he goes on my AVOID list.

Over the years I have had a few problems with Ebay. But compared to the volume of orders I've gotten it has been few and far between. I have had more junk that was misrepresented or faulty from Ali Express than Ebay.

I am certainly not one to count anyones money, $28 is $28 but....... There have been more issues mentioned here regarding hams screwing other hams for thousands of dollars. This from only a few states away, not China.

We need to do our due diligence in researching vendors the best we can whether private or otherwise. It's still going to happen, but maybe less often.

You know when it's really bad:  When sellers -- hams or otherwise -- try to screw you face to face at hamfests.  Like a rusty lump of junk -- purportedly recovered from the wreck of the USS Arizona.  A National receiver purportedly use by Harry Hopkins in the White House to monitor transmissions.  Various transmitters & receivers removed from the Enola Gay and Bockscar.  The W-J RS-111C purportedly used to monitor the Watergate.

No truer words have ever been spoken.  When humans are involved, nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, can guarantee you won't get screwed.

I also have made poor judgment on handling transactions for stuff from China through EBAY.  But I don't blame EBAY and whine about it on EHAM !

I've purchased off eBay from China and Okinawa with great results. The 2 times I was screwed on eBay were both by Hams in California..go figure.
