If something starts to work a little funny where to sell it ? I have had bad luck with Ebay but gotta say the majority of bad has been with those that were obvious not amateurs. (selling amateur equip, etc) The old 'estate sale' etc.

Chinese ? Would you buy a Yaesu,Kenwood,ICOM or ?  vs. something totally Chinese that you can find little of reviews and if you do they are BAD. Bug Lists. Fix some and model is replaced by another with a new bug list.

Some rave about their new Chinese 1K purchase and end of asking who does service/repair ? No such thing as a schematic.

China's electronic and cyber warfare technologies are staggeringly sophisticated. You think they are incapable of producing a decent radio??
The arrogance of a few hundred year old Country's citizens baffles me.

Of course China can make great products!

Where do you think Apple stuff comes from?  Many (most?) electronics products from reputable companies are made there.  These products however are made to these companies' designs, quality control, and testing.

Most of the Chinese brand ham radios I've seen are produced from ham radio hobbyists.  They are designed by a single ham and they have boards produced and do the assembly themselves.  As they don't make tons of sales, and are their personal designs that they don't want copied or stolen, they don't always provide schematics.  As they are personal projects, they design something, then work to improve it, and then make another version etc etc.  So there are changes, limited runs, sometimes bugs can be expected.

So there is a big difference between these two kinds of purchases.  With the former, you kind of know what to expect; with the latter, you get more inovative, fun, designs.  Maybe things geared more for portable use.  Performance can certainly be good, but unless the rigs are tested by a major magazine or some hams with good labs, then one isn't always sure.  For these I think it's good to join a user group first and see others experiences, and how problems - if any - are solved by the group and/or the designer/seller.

It's not that they can't make quality equipment, but they like to sell junk to the suckers in that 200 year country.

Sorry but I don't trust the semiconductors that are sold from mainland China. 90% junk  knock-offs unless they are sourced from the Chinese factory who made a particular Chinese part.

never spend more than you can afford to lose.

i've bought stuff on ebay for many years and only been stiffed ONCE- and that
was a $15 component tester from china several months ago.
who knows, it may yet show up when the cv goes away. i'll have to keep my address current,
just in case.
ebay no longer has that particular listing.

ebay and it's vendors have been good to me.

I purchase from eBay quite a lot and have never had problems, but my rules are:

1) Never buy from a seller that is not in my country.
2) Never pay more than a few tens of dollars for anything unless I can collect it in person and inspect it.

If you're in the States and buying on Ebay (or from any online seller) and paying with PayPal:

Fund PayPal through your credit card (other than PayPal's).  DO NOT -- REPEAT, DO NOT -- FUND PAYPAL BY DEBIT TO YOUR BANK ACCOUNT.

When you use fund PayPal through your credit card, you have error resolution rights.  When you fund through your bank account, you don't.

My credit card issuer saved me several times when PayPal was reluctant.

Been using EBay for buying and selling since '04, only got stiffed once on a $10 item.  My rule is not to buy from any seller whose feedback is less than body temperature.  And yes I have purchased electronic items from China, never encountered a problem.

Think of all the positives and don't let one apple spoil the barrel.

Pretty much the same here. Reading comprehension is a must for using ebay, and I find many who have problems using ebay lack this essential.

True, we believe what we want to believe even when we can comprehend"

Alternately, buyers develop a severe case of "Gotta Have It" and the thought process ceases.

I have had no problems with refunds from aliexpress. Counterfeit? refund. Failed to arrive? refund. I prefer aliexpress to ebay for goods from the East. Shipping takes no longer and is generally less expensive. Goods are generally less expensive too.

I've also ordered direct from distributors in China and been very happy. My Cubot Quest cell phone is great. $99 shipped. I've had it a year. Dropped in pond, drooped out of back of pickup truck, no cracks after a year carrying in the back pocket.

The thing is more how serious the seller is and how the customer is treated.
I have been stiffet twice.
1. One american seller that screwed me with a higher shipping cost. When I had payd the seller contacted mee and asked for more money for shipping. He clamed that he had mis calculated the shipping. I should have complained to Ebay and required him to keep to what where agread in the auction
2. A chineese seller dragged out the time of a complain for late delivery until I could not complain to TO ebay. It was like "just wait one more week I'll garantuee it will be delivered" for several weeks.

Just got screwed out of $28 in shipping back to China, and Ebay refuses to make it right.

Lesson to be learned.  NEVER pay return shipping for any item.  It's the seller's obligation to pay that, and if you do pay, you'll end up eating it.

And NEVER trust Chinese vendors.  They too often sell junk, defects, and returned items, betting that Americans will toss it into the bucket, rather than fight to return it.

Buy American!!!!!

I've been on both sides of that fence. The seller is not obligated in any way to pay return shipping unless they offer. Such has been standard practice in commerce since long before the internet.

Buy american? I would try more to support domestic companies if I could afford to but the sad fact is that many american manufactured products are way overpriced compared to their foreign counterparts, and in a lot of cases quality is not so much better that it justifies the higher prices. Many, many american products are assembled from foreign sourced parts and so it is really becoming a moot point.

As has already been said - do your due diligence before buying. That has been a good idea since long before eBay and ecommerce. It doesn't matter if you buy from eBay or Amazon or QRZ or eHam or Craigslist or Target or Walmart, its all the same. Try your best to know what you are getting for your money before buying and try to buy only from reputable sellers. For others, follow your instincts - if its too good to be true then....

Good luck, hope it works out better for you in the future.
