TenTec isn't even trying
« on: October 31, 2020, 07:50:06 AM »

I was recently repairing an Orion, but though I'd cut to the chase and email a question to TenTec support.
It was a simple question about the how certain functions were routed. It would have saved me a lot of time rather than trying to chase it through all that mess they call schematics. ( I guess that's what happens when computer engineers design a hybrid device?). There isn't always complete silk screening for component location either.

Anyway, it took them a week to return an email. I won't call it an answer because they didn't address the question at all.
They did suggest that I send it in for a minimum service fee of $140 with additional work billed at $125/hr.
The turn around would be MORE THAN 12 weeks!

I get the feeling that if I did that, they would end up charging me at least $140 ( plus shipping both ways) to tell me that it's unrepairable because one of the issues was on the A7 board.

I had it fixed later the same day I originally sent the email- no thanks to TenTec.

How do they expect to rebuild a customer base like this?

I read a nasty reply from Tentec's owner on the Eham forum recently to all  those who DARE complain about Tentec.
The man needs a reality check!

I had seen this type of response back in 1995 from the Ten Tec at the time VP on a repair with a buddies Titan amp which had an open primary on the power transformer, the amp was one month out of warranty and even though three local hams had the same amp, had the same issue with the transformer but there amp's were covered but my biddies amp ended up with a $400+ charge for new transformer and at that time $100 bench charge  which got me cause after measuring the transformer I had told them the culprit was the primary winding but they charged away!
When the Orion hit the streets I was thinking about buying one but I remember my friend Mike and the bad taste in his mouth with the soo called great customer service he received from Ten Tec on that amp and I said no way. I also know what you mean about there schematic's but years back when they first came into the ham market I used to call  them Tonka Toys the way they were built and designed, some things never change.

I would NEVER treat my customers that way. They are people, just like me :).

In your case, I would have gotten back to you within 24 hrs with at least a quick reply of acknowledgement. And if they didn't have an an answer for you, they should have simply told you that.

Glad you got it fixed though, congrats are in order sir! :)

Maybe it's time for a name change to go along with the new company. Let's say something like dropping it down to a ThreeTec.

Or since turnaround time is 12 weeks they could name it after the number of Techs they have... OneTec(h).

I see the previous anti-Ten Tec thread finally scrolled off.

Guess the Premature Funeral Committee just couldn’t let that happen, could they?

Pathetic, the lot of you.

Ten Tec for all intensive purposes...is dead.

The company does not have a product they can build to compete with Yaesu, Kenwood  and Icom. Over seas amplifier are selling for half the cost of the Alphas. Ten Tec has no one that can engineer a radio to compete with today's hi-performance SDR transceivers.

I emailed them with no per-conceived notion about the state of affairs at TenTec.
In fact, I was hoping they were getting their act together .  I'm just reporting the facts.

Considering  the blistering diatribe the owner posted on the forum ( very disappointing!) and the recent experience I had, why would you defend them? Like the title says; Tentec isn't even trying.

It's true what they say about the fish rotting from the head.

That's not what the president/owner says on his "future" page!
If what you say is true, he should liquidate and stop the pain.
Until the site goes 404, I assume the company is still in business.

How do you know that they aren’t “even trying”?  Because you didn’t get instant results?  Because you’d have to wait your turn, because the COVID-19 mandated shutdown (something totally out of the company’s control)?

Talk about blistering.  One potential transaction that didn’t go your way, and you’re out gunning for them full blast.

You wanted an excuse.  You manufactured one.

That’s the actions of an Internet bully.

I don’t like bullies.

You don’t want to deal with them again?  Then don’t.  Publicly bullying them, to embarrass them for not giving you special treatment, that crosses the line.

Didn't the current owner state when he first took over that he was not going to be a ready reference service?

If that were the criteria to make or break a company, then Yaesu died 3 years ago when they never responded to my tech question. As well as not supply parts for their radio. But it didn't.

So lets be fair...you got what they said you would get.

W3WN: You indeed meet your own description of an "Internet bully".

Incase you did not notice the Forum Title is "Company Review".  Which to a reasonable individual would indicate, one would "review" THEIR EXPERIENCE with a "company". The fact that you do not like his negative "review", does not negate the fact that he posted a "review" of HIS EXPERIENCE in dealing with the "company".

How about instead of beating AC2EU for a negative "review", you write a positive review of YOUR experience with Ten-Tec, since Mike took over the company ...... if indeed you have one.

He wanted to know why I objected to his review.  So I told him.  Period.

You attack me personally for responding.  Again.  Remind me, the next time you sit next to me on the shuttle bus at Hamvention, to change seats, since you clearly don’t care for me.  I wouldn’t want you to bother with the usual pleasantries when you clearly don’t mean them.

Bottom line is, a very negative review was posted.  I objected to it.  The reviewer aseked why.  I told him.  Discussion over.

Yea, customer service.  I picked up a customer's piece for repair yesterday; told me what to fix.  The diagnosis and repair instructions were wrong and wouldn't have fixed anything.

Last week I questioned the inspection results on my car.  Service manager had me bring it back in.   Significantly different results second time around.

So I've recently been on both sides of the customer service dilemma.

AC2EU did not ask any question of you regarding your objection, he made an observation that obviously rubbed you the wrong way.  Then you try to deflect with, "discussion over".

For you maybe, but not for the rest of us.

The fact is, he asked you " why would you defend them"?  you never answered his question, instead, you just went into attack mode.
