"If you press the SEL knob momentarily, then rotate the SEL knob, you can now change the operating frequency in 1 MHz stepe, allowing very quick frequency excursions."

That is not really an answer to the original question, is it? The original question is one that I've asked myself before now - would love to know the answer, if there is one!

Menu option 33 selects between coarse and fine tuning.

Um, well, yes, it actually is really an answer and potentially the one the OP was looking for. The original question was "How do I change the tuning speed...?" and the method I posted 100% does change the tuning speed. Maybe it's not what he/she was looking for but that is impossible to know from the vague nature of the original question. Your assumption may be right, it may be wrong, but it definitely indicates you are kind of a twit.

I'm aware of option 33 , but I think that only affects ssb , if I remember correctly.
The change I'm taking about toggles the "running man" icon.
Does 33 do that? I don't have the radio handy to check.

I don't think that its possible to change tuning speed between fast & slow without using the mic button, other than the menu #33 option but that option doesn't help much if you want to do it on the fly....

That's a bit extreme, sir! I was pointing out, without any kind of insult, that your answer really does not address the original question - the "fast" button on the microphone doubles the tuning speed of the main dial - very different from tuning in 1MHz steps!

Please! Everybody play nice!   ;D

I have the radio next to me now. As I suspected ,33 does not change to very fine. It's on "fine mode" now which is 100 HZ increments( coarse is 200 Hz). If I get rid of running man, I think the main tuning dial goes to 10HZ which is better when tweaking the tuning with a very sharp 300 HZ filter! Click, click ...gone.
The select button will increment 2K at a time without pushing it. Pushing it puts it into 1 MHZ steps.

I guess I'll have to velcro a pcb with a tac switch on the case to do the button function.

I understand your question. When you hit the tuning speed button on the MIC, the little figure of a man running shows up on the radio's display.
If I remember correctly, on my FT 897D, I could change the tuner speed via the button on the mic and there was a way to do the same with a button on the radio. I can't perform that task now since I sold the radio. I did have an FT817 and the only way to get the little guy to run, change tuning speed is via the button on the mic.
So to answer your question, you must use the button on the mic to perform the task you are asking about.

anybody know?

Not for sure, but here is what I see.   In my 818nd manual, there is a pin-out diagram for the microphone jack.  There is a pin for FAST,  UP, DOWN, and a pin for GND.  I suspect touching FAST to GND will toggle on/off the running man.  Note: there is a separate MIC GND which is only for MIC speaker ground I would bet.

I found a schematic for the MH-31 microphone and it appears consistent -- Looks to me like the FAST, UP and DOWN all use the same GND  separate from MIC GND. and these switches all appear to be normally open push button type.

Disclaimer, at the time of this writing, I have not attempted.  I will try it and let you know how it goes.
