"Modify" statement/question
« on: November 11, 2020, 07:33:42 AM »

In another, (seldom used), forum I noticed a "Modify" ability. I've also found that our (beloved ;D) forum allows modifications to be allowed for a limited amount of time. I have no idea of the amount of work that would be involved, having no training in programming, but is it possible/probable that that could be looked into?
TIA, Charlie

As I recall one of the moderators of these forums explained the relatively recent limitation of time for post modification. Possibly that explanation can be retrieved (by those who have the time and energy) by doing a thoughtful search.

I think the justification for the time limitation is to encourage forward progress in forum discussions with the requirement that posters be thoughtful and responsible for their contributions from the time of their original submission. Modification is allowed for a limited period so that posters do have an opportunity to improve clarity, correct grammar or spelling, etc.

I think the system works well-enough. If I have the opportunity to modify my posts for an indefinite period I'm likely to continue to polish a statement for clarity, etc. As it is I can simply add another post which improves a previous entry.

However, I do wish I had the option to delete my messages.....I suspect if I sent a request to delete my message, the monitor would do so.

I moderated a motorcycle riding club forum many years ago and it was a lot of work, more than I counted on.

I agree. That would be very useful.

Perhaps several malcontents should appeal to the moderator(s) to add this function.

MK: Be nice, now. I'm only a malcontent when the wife objects to my purchasing a very much needed receiver part. Honestly, I don't believe the fairer half has a lick of common sense when it comes to true ham radio necessities! Sheesh!!

There are two edit periods built into our forums software.

1) Courtesy Edit (amount of time allowed for a post to be edited before updating/logging the last edit date - basically a stealth edit) -
This is set to 2 minutes.
2) Overall Edit   -
This is set to 20 minutes.

The reason for these limitations is so that a thread doesn't fall apart with broken references.  Allowing deletion or late edits would create the possibility of orphaned responses.

In the real world you can't un-say anything.

Think before you write.
Preview and proof before you submit.

Everyone who asks nicely can get their post edited to a degree.
Upon request, I have removed PII, fixed a horrible spelling error, etc.

Remember, though, some things on the Internet can potentially last forever. ;-)
