VARA FM & ID-5100
« on: November 11, 2020, 04:46:20 PM »

I have been trying for several days to make VARA FM work with my ID-5100. My radio will work with FLDIGI but not Winlink. Can anyone help?

Frustrating.  Which version of Vara are you using?  Free or licensed?
Are you within clear line of site of an FM node to link your tx'n?
Fresnel effect can be a problem if it is a long hop with obstructions along the path.  Tall buildings especially.

If those things check out ok, make sure to override anything D-Star on the ID5100.  If its built-in digital encoding/addressing bumps into the VARA data stream the signal will be messed up for sure.

We are experimenting with the same set-up as yours with an ARES installation here.  The ID5100 is a sophisticated radio and D-Star is  complex itself. Fellows with a neighboring club who bought into it on initial release found it cumbersome for portable/mobile emergency operation and gave up on it.  We ran an exercise with ours last  year and even our most advanced operator found the ID51 a challenge to use.  So we are wary. Please let me know how it goes, or doesn't.

Good luck.

Like I stated the 5100 works like a charm with Fldigi using the same Signalink and cables for over a year. When sending the message through VARA FM I can't even get the ppt on the Signalink to light up. There is something stopping the signal from reaching the Signalink and radio. I have made sure D-Star is off and I'm not sure what to try next.

Al, I'm running a licensed version VARA FM 3.1.1. I've tried 2 different sites. I  am not getting the ppt on the Signalink or the tx on the radio to activate. When I try the Auto Tune on the VARA FM sound card settings it will activate the the ppt on the Signalink then I get the failure to connect message.

Hi Tammy,

For a moment I wondered if there could be a jumper or setting change needed in the SignalLink.  But you say it has been working fine with the set-up there. Have a look at this from TigerTronics and see if anything fits with what yours is (not) doing  . . .

One cable from the Signal Link goes into the microphone port on the radio (mic is disconnected). The audio cable goes in back in one of the speaker ports. The band in use must be the same as the speaker port.

Winlink needs to be set to Vara FM.
