Need Recent RS-918 Radio settings to Compare with Mine
« on: November 16, 2020, 12:24:53 PM »

need help from folks here. I sent out a RS-918 to another ham , but he cant get power out claims it shows on meter but nothing out. i don't think he set up the PA bias on the radio. possible main reset wiped out setting. i have a sheet from a RS-928(different model) but don't know if those settings will work. anyone having a RS-918 would appreciate the settings you have so i can get close to see issue.
73s thanks all..bruno

Bias is not going to stop power output I think.
Vox, mic or line input, out of band, maybe a qsk option.
CW or voice or both?

I just saw this, so sorry! Did you get this resolved? I have an RS-918 and have most of it figured out, working great on WSJT-X and FT8.

I have the version that has the large snap in battery in the back (978) and its been great.
It does have some design flaws as a small simple radio....

The receiver can overload on strong signals, a good full size antenna brings that out.
I run the gain setting in the menu all the way down on the lower bands anyway.

It does not have the cleanest output, its got a sort of IF leakage on TX in CW mode.

But it has well thought out software and controls, a great screen and display, and fantastic fidelity.

The early China copies were poor and prone to failure, the early one of mine had the eprom fail after a month.
The 978 has been working fine for about a year now.

Elecraft needs to make a radio like this.
The Icom 705 is likely fine but like their 7300 has poor fidelity and is expensive for a 5 watt rig that does not have a built in antenna tuna.

Seriously?  You want Elecraft to make a radio that can overload on strong signals, and not have the cleanest output with IF leakage on TX in CW mode?  The Elecraft KX2 and KX3 will run circles around this thing.  They put out 10W and have 3 kHz audio.  Maybe you forgot about those?

But the 705 also has none of the problems mentioned above either.  It puts out 10W on 12VDC, and has 6m, 2m and 70cm included too.  Totally different class of radio.

So in summary, what you said is the RS-918 does not perform very well, but has nice software, controls, display, and sound.  It's eye candy in other words.

Please forgive my slightly snide attitude, but these two radios are in a considerably higher performance class than the RS-918.

Silly.
I want Elecraft to make one WITHOUT the flaws, I am sure you knew that.

I want Elecraft to ADD a nice color band scope, great fidelity to the receive audio, sync AM, in a $500.00 hand held with their great antenna tuner built in and a good size battery.

If they can build it in China, Elecraft could do it.
With the parts reduction of SDR radios, they should be able to do it.
mcHF and Malachit sdr are two cheap simple systems that show what can be done for under $500.00.
The future is SDR and its best if it has a nice screen, great fidelity (not just for ham use) easy controls, built in modern battery, built in tuner, and 20 watts output.
Say a G90 with a bigger screen and some of the bugs works out, or a few more knobs.
Or a KX3 with a nice band scope built in. Or a table top radio like the 7300.
The 7300 is about $1000.00, elecraft needs a radio of that class, even if its only 20 watts.
They will have the K4 at some point, for $4000.00+?
Everyone else is coming out with $1500.00 radios  that are very good in many respects and they ALL have scopes.
