Kenwood TM-V71 Programming
« on: November 25, 2020, 01:27:10 PM »

Problem with programming 2 meter repeaters and tones.  I do not have any problem loading
the frequency, direction, offset but TONE is another issue.  I can enter and save the TONEs but
once I turn off the rig, the radio forgets all of those tones.  It remembers the frequencies and
offsets but not the tones.  Curious problem.  Any ideas?  73, Tom, W4OEQ

To make matters worse, the transceiver will not respond at all when I push the [F]  key.  I hate to do a master reset and re-enter all of those repeater frequencies.  Any ideas?  73, W4OEQ

Really, really worse.  Screen displays freq for one local repeater but no controls work at all for any function.  One repeater frequency pair is on channel 1.  I press the mic key and it transmits on the right freq but no audio is transmitted and nothing is received.  Recycling through ON-OFF did not fix the problem.  ...... Tried to do a RESET and the transceiver refused to reset.  Ideas?

I have two TM-V71's; one in the shack, the other in the go-kit.  I've not experienced problem you preseneted, but a 'master reset' might be your first recourse as the rig's 'brains' might be scrambled.  Another option is consider investing in the RT Systems program software and cable which makes reprogramming and updates much easier.

Just read your update.  Things seem to be going down hill.  Is this a new V71 or 'pre-owned'?

Have tried to do a Master Reset several times and it will not reset.  It tunes to the original first channel setup I had programmed and then will not transmit.  I am the original owner and bought it brand new.  It has been working perfectly until today.   Hmmmm.  Maybe an early Christmas present is a solution......W4OEQ

Be in contact with either AAVid in Texas or MTS in Washington State.  They both work on Kenwood; AAVid exclusively and Scott, at MTS, works on post 1988 Kenwood gear.  Both have excellent reps and usually ask some leading questions and give suggestions to try before shipping.

Have you tried leave it disconnected from the power supply for a few (5 minutes to a long time ...say 30 minutes) and trying again ?

wow,my memory is alive. been a year? since i had the tone problem...
page 28,line 4...   my note says "not set"
i underlined "other than".   so have a look and make a note when you get it.
its tricky..
note also says 'rev" ok.  i think this is to fix the tones. i was doing it wrong. do not remember exact detail but its right there on line 4.

What is often the case is that the microprocessor has a very low standby current requirement such that it can run for a period of time just from the charge in its bypass capacitors. So sometimes you just need to wait it out.

We make a product with a μP that only draws 2 μA in standby and can run down to 1.5 volts. It makes for interesting troubleshooting.

Much to my surprise, the rig is working again!  I got frustrated with it last night and just turned it off.  I started shopping on the internet for a replacement rig.  Got up this morning and turned on the Kenwood and it was working perfectly!   I guess it just needed a good night's sleep as did I.    :-)    W4OEQ

so, maybe, if i shut off and turn back quickly it gets caught "in between",? and get stuck?
my 7300 did nothing till i let it die, not knowing what i did...

It could be that or it could be that the processor reset circuit wasn't picking up the power cycling. This often happens when a linear power supply is used as its filter capacitors allow the output voltage to decrease gradually when the supply is shut off. This can be problematic for the μP supervisory circuits.

But in either case, a period of no power applied can produce the desired result - as you have observed.
