Online Instruction/Exam Prep for Extra Class?
« on: November 26, 2020, 06:03:43 AM »

My son, aged 14, passed his General exam over the summer.  Now, he is being homeschooled because of Covid and I think it's a great opportunity for him to work on upgrading to Extra.

I could teach him myself, but I'm already teaching him English and social studies so I think he'd benefit from seeing another face and getting another perspective.

Does anybody know of anybody who is offering online classes?  (Not pre-recorded YouTube videos, which he won't watch, but real-time interactive teaching over Zoom or some other videoconference platform)?

Check QRZ.com, I sorta remember seeing an extensive Q&A as part of their own free production.

hamtestonline is the best in my opinion.  It gets you there quick.  Very easy to use.

I just took the Extra exam.
It's pretty HARD.
Is the boy a genius, by any chance?
Takes a lot of training and broad range of subjects.

I used the book by Gordon West. Illustrations really help.
Very helpful.
Concepts I had trouble with - - I looked at videos and papers on the subjects I had difficulty with.

Good luck.

That is a good point.  Some people are visual learners and merely taking the tests over and over again may be an exercise in futility.
Instead, a good picture that explains something is needed for them to learn a concept.

The young boy has all the time in the world to upgrade. Doesn't need to be Instant Extra.  Let him spend a little time in grade and actually see if he has any real interest in Amateur Radio.

Have him spend some time outside and get some fresh air instead of permanently planting him in front of the pu-ter screen.  A few outside chores also to learn a little about doing work.  A little exercise is good for mind and body.

I would have to agree.  At 14 don't worry about the upgrade.

That pu-ter screen aint doin him any favors believe me.

Bless you.
