Kenwood TH-D72a discontinued
« on: December 16, 2020, 11:54:40 AM »

According to the Universal radio website https://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/ht/3072.html the Kenwood TH-D72A has been discontinued. I looked at HRO and DXE and it is no longer in their online catalogs.

Yes, it has finally happened, after being on the market for about 10 years.

I still use the TH-D72 I bought 10 years ago, when they arrived at the Phoenix HRO store. Other than replacing the battery pack a couple of years ago, and updating firmware over the years, it's still working well on FM and packet.

It's a darn shame although I assume the economics for further production didn't allow for it to be a smart business move. We have both D7 and D72 in our home and they are both very capable radios that will not be soon surpassed in what they have provided satellite operators (and others) over the past decade or two.

And Kenwood just announced the end of production for the TH-D74. From Kenwood's web site, translated from Japanese...

Kenwood pulled out of the Australian market completely in 2019.

I hope these are not the signs of the end for Kenwood.

Are we surprised?  The ham world has rapidly gravitated toward cheap HTs from China.

Experienced hams are telling new hams to get a Baofeng, or even giving them one.  What market effect can we expect from that?

Japan will no doubt completely move on from HTs within a year or two.

HF rigs are becoming the next victims of the cheap clones.

It seems that's what most hams want, isn't it?
