Radioddity Support - None if not a Direct Purchase
« on: December 23, 2020, 04:33:07 PM »

After just over a year my GD-77 died. The warranty period is stated to be 18 months.  It was purchased new from an Ebay seller in 2019 since the Radioddity site was out of stock at the time.  Contacting support for assistance led to an email exchange that resulted in no help since the radio was not purchased directly from them, even though it was brand new at time of purchase. The Ebay seller is no longer reachable. I provided all of the requested info, but was refused any assistance. (PayPal Transaction ID, Ebay Item no., S/N, Dates, etc.)  Nowhere do they state there is no warranty if the purchase wasn't made directly from their online store.

The response from Radioddity was this:
"I am sorry that we couldn't find the order details so that we are unable to offer you further assistance. In this case, we kindly recommend that you directly contact the seller of this order via eBay to process the return and exchange a new one. Many thanks for your kind understanding."

I can understand your frustration. But, given that you didn't purchase from Radioddity, I can understand them not wanting to get involved as well. Your only other option if you cannot get help from eBay, is to try and contact Xiegu directly and see if they can help you.
But, I think you're being unfair in blaming Radioddity for this and trashing them for not supporting something they didn't sell to you.
I have had good support from Radioddity for things I have purchased from them.
Sometimes, eBay is not the ideal place to buy things.

I'm not familiar with the GD-77 or RadioOddity - are RadioOddity the manufacturer or just a distributor? James mentioned Xiegu above... If RadioOddity is just a distributor, then I'm afraid that they have no obligation towards you if you went somewhere else for it. If they are the manufacturer, then they should take responsibility, but it may be difficult to hold them to it.

Normally, a warranty goes to the first buyer. Unless specifically stated, warranties are not transferable with the sale of an item. So unless the E-Bay seller was an actual dealer, there would be no warranty. The first purchaser...the E-bay seller would have the warranty if the seller bought it from a dealer. Again it is the chain of ownership and the terms of the original warranty that come into play here. And in this case, because you did not purchase it from the dealership, it normally precludes the dealership from processing a warranty claim.

However, a manufacturer may honor the warranty. But that is rare because the chain of ownership, even though it was never used, has no direct line from the manufacturer to dealer to consumer. They have no way to identify whether it was a defect or damaged by someone before you owned it.

Simply put...if you want a new item and the warranty that comes with it, make sure the seller is a dealer.

Follow-Up:

The comments/replies posted here are all well understood. I was under the impression I had bought the radio from an "authorized dealer".  On the bright side, this story now has a positive ending.  8)

Although the Ebay seller had nothing but Radioddity products for sale and their seller name was 'radioddity', they were likely just a seller that misrepresented themselves as being an authorized dealer. I can't be sure now since they're long gone and can't be checked. At the time of purchase the actual Radioddity website store was out of stock and didn't have any GD-77s to sell. The purchase went without incident and I've enjoyed the radio until it died, knowing it was a cheap entry into DMR.

In the meantime, knowing I had nothing to lose with a dead radio and seemingly no support, troubleshooting the dead radio revealed that the internal SMD 3A fuse was open, a minor repair. Problem solved.  It's now working again.

Now several days after the fact, Radioddity has offered to replace the failed radio so in fairness I must give them the nod for (finally) standing behind their product.

Now another Latin phrase comes into play, "Mea Culpa", however the 'Caveat Emptor' phrase I used earlier still applies to me as well as anyone else reading this.  Verify and validate that a reseller is authentic by vetting them before committing to any purchase.   :)

P.S.  I'm still a bit puzzled... here is the final response from Radioddity support:

I am sorry that you cannot reach out to the seller via eBay. After confirming with our team, we could check your order record successfully. And Radioddity values you, we would love to help you return the defective radio and exchange a new one for you. Would this solution could be acceptable?

If acceptable, please feel free to let me know, and we will send you the return instructions to help you return the parcel. Many thanks for your kind understanding.

Cheers,
