Used to be a lot of talk about the FCC getting catching you with black vans with antennas. I never saw one and if you think about it you would need a fleet to cover the whole continent.
I wonder if anyone has seen these iconic enforcement vehicles way back when? I would imagine with todays technology that finding a signal with satellites would be a piece of cake.

The Amateur Radio Service is supposed to be self-policing.  That's been the case for many decades.  The FCC has never had the manpower to enforce every violation on the ham bands, either technical or verbal.  That's what the ARRL Official Observers were supposed to do, although I thought they abandoned that program a few years back.  Better a nastygram from an OO than a citation and possible fine and license suspension from the FCC.

I believe they did away with the Official Observers back in 2018.  I have had 2 Official Observers cards mailed to me and both were positive.  It made me feel good if they would have been negative I would have felt bad and changed whatever they said I was doing wrong.

I have been a Extra Class for over 30 years.  Do you think that the changes regarding the requirements to obtain a License have contributed to the obscene behavior we hear now on the air?

In a way i agree with you, if one had to spent more time, (i.e code) to pass the license, and the FCC was far more strict, yes I would think it would be at least be formal.

It is like anything, harder to obtain, more respect

I to obtained my Extra in 1980...I can tell you that, even though I had a BSEE, and passed all 9 commercial FCC licenses, my Ham Ticket carried more clout

I launched may career in satellite communications for 40 years, I even found my beautiful wife through ham radio, Ham radio also lead me to travel 70 countries the last 44 years

You can look at my QRZ Page NN2X, and get all the information on how Ham radio changed my life.

Today, same job interview, in most cases they would think Ham radio died...

My son, who was 12 at the time, said Dad, do you wish for me to pass this "Ham Ticket" I said it would be sure nice..I think it took him over the weekend, and presto his calls are KI5FJE..

Lets face it, that could never happen in 1980, there was no pool of questions, you had to read comprehend, and pass the code...My son (Adam), would had to study at least 6 months..

Cheers

I think the single biggest factor in the bad behavior of a few....rotten apples....is the lack of effective enforcement by FCC.

All that changed during the CB craze and afterwards.
Jim I think times changed and the FCC changed with it. Decades ago FCC did enforce rules especially HF bands. Times were much different then, commercial broadcast used frequencies near HF and HF caused interference to low band analog vhf TV. Those days are gone, even commercial AM broadcast is going away. Just no commercial interest in HF anymore. Only ones who complain are hams, otherwise no public concern or complaints.

Similar to alcohol and drugs use to be a bad thing. Not saying it is right, but there is no going back. And that's the way it is.

It wasn't all that long ago that people would not use filthy/dirty/vulgar language on the telephone...partly in fear of being charged/arrested...but mostly from proper upbringing and environment.

A lot of what is heard/complained about today is  a result of the dope culture/children being raised with lack of a father figure in the home/etc.   a.k.a.  the progressive movement
