23 cm band ground wave
« on: December 27, 2020, 04:36:55 PM »

Before i drop money on a 70 element 23cm yagi and rotor i wanted to ask everyone some questions that have been down this road. i can do vertical and horizontal on yagi with a rotor design i made(cuz i hav a 23cm repeater here in town) and can do horizontal for ssb and eme work when ever i decide to add 3x more of these cophased.  anyway i am looking for what antennas ppl hav and power they run and what kind of distance your getting on ground wave and if know what the stations difference in elevation.  there are some guys here that run 23cm fm and ssb for local

Ground wave on 23cm ???
What for ? Ground wave range on 23cm might reach as far as 20 FEET.

Ground wave means that the signal follows the curvature of the Earth.  That doesn't happen on frequencies higher than about 10 MHz, let alone 1300 MHz.

Here we go with a 2 post wonder with no ham call heading for Troll status who knows nothing about the subject. Likely one of the other trolls with a back up ID for when it gets banned.

On 23 cm the ground wave coverage can be as good as 2M or a real dud depending upon location, structures, trees, etc. With a little tropo boost almost daily I can work 150 miles on SSB with the 25W transverter and a 45 element looper.

So a 21st century Extra  works 150 miles using tropospheric scatter on vhf, he then proclaims that ground wave propagation exists on vhf, uhf, and up. Ha!

The basics have not changed in the bold, new (dumb downed) world.
Ground wave propagation only exists, for any practical purpose, at MEDIUM WAVE and lower frequencies.
In amateur radio that would be 160 meters.

Maybe a real expert like Steve WB2WIK/6 will come along and try to explain this fact again...as he has tried to many, many times before.

If not maybe the all knowing should go to wikipedia.org and do a little reading on "ground wave" to get acquainted with basic propagation fact.

thanks km1h.  makes sense due to guys running 5ghz or higher are getting 3-40mi or so I've been reading that's with dishes(30+dbi) 3mi being line of sight and 40mi being help with mother nature.  my tower is up 120' and a 70 element yagi.  so on 23cm i might make it across town and down the way!!!!  worth trying i guess
