« on: January 10, 2021, 02:28:45 PM »

Hello
Last night huge interference every 16Khz across 40 & 80 meter band. really bad on vertical not quite as bad on inverted V on roof. Any ideas? I thought the 16Khz was interesting

Thanks

Most likely a switching power supply.  Could be an appliance, cell phone charger, wall Mart power supply, ad nauseum.

Any old CRT TVs nearby? They had a 16 kHz horizontal sweep rate. I guess you have to be sort of old to know that these days.... ::)

The old CRT based TVs used 15,750 Khz for horizontal sweep. Might check your LED lighting also. The cheap china bulbs have noisy power supplies. Get an old AM transistor radio and track the source down....Fox Hunting!!!

Good Luck,

I would shut off circuit breakers, one at a time. Then look at everything connected to the offending circuit (assuming the problem goes away with one of the breakers off). Depending where you live, it may also be coming from a neighbor's home. Also, if the problem exists on 160m, you could try to sniff it out with an AM radio, as someone else had suggested.

Is there any signal still broadcast there that an old CRT TV could receive? It's many years here since the last analogue transmitter was switched off - all you would get now is hiss...

Someone could use a digital converter box, connected to their old TV.

Seriously? CRT TVs were terrible compared with modern LED and LCD TVs - why would anyone spend money on digital converters when a new solid state TV is probably cheaper?

Digital converter boxes were available "free" to the poor folks who had no alternative.
Poor people lack the money to invest in better options.  Worse, they often fall into the mindset of spending it all now.

Martin,

Yes.  We still have analog TV here in the states.

It's usually a small station with low ERP.

When I lived at 6K feet above the central California valley and 4K feet above the Mojave desert it really surprised me how many analog transmitters where still functional.

However, none of the big network analog TXs where still active after a certain date.
