Since your call suffix is GGC, you might use "Graham" and if the ask, reply "Great Graham Cracker".

Of course with my call, I could just be "It". "It" is short for "Cousin It".

Good one! Brought a chuckle to my hardened face, ha, ha!

I recall a digital contest several years ago when everyone from California was reporting the name 'Mike'.  I asked one participant why everyone seemed to be using 'Mike'.  Turns out a very prominent DX'er in California had become SK a few days earlier.  The word quickly spread to use his name, Mike, in the contest to honor his memory.

Typically for the NA Sprints and the NAQP's where a name is part of the exchange, that happens alot.  A contest club will decide to use the name of a recently member who became a SK.

Nothing wrong with it.  It's just a way of honoring the fellow club member.   But as someone said earlier, just be sure to use the same name during the entire contest period.  The same goes for multi-ops.  Yes, they have to decide on a name and must also use the same name with all of the stations.

Entered my first contest this last weekend, the NA QSO party.

I found out a LOT of folks have trouble with my name: Vince,
so I shortened it to Vin.
Even that proved hard to hear as the "V" sound is like a hum.

QUESTION: I am wondering if I have to use my real name for a contest.
Is the name used compared to my on-record call sign?
I was thinking of using my middle name; Tom.

Vince, Welcome to radio contesting :-)  My wife operated the contest this weekend, and her name is hard to spell.  What happens if people copy it wrong?

She wrote the NAQP organizer and asked about that.  He replied that they keep a list of various spellings for names, and people don't lose points if the spelling is off, just so it is close.

So you can use any name you like, and not worry about the exact spelling on the other end :-)

Vince - as everyone said, in contests with name use whatever you like. If you find people have problems copying Vince on phone, if you still want to use your real name you might try a few things:

  • Check out your audio settings - under/over modulated, compressor not on/set too high, RF getting into your audio, etc. Heil Sound has some guidelines here.
  • When you say "Vince" give extra punch to the V at the start
  • Say "Vince as in Vincent" or give out phonetics - slows things down but eliminating repeats might make up for it

I lucked out.

My real name is James.  I always go by Jim on the air.  Seems to work pretty well. :)

I could see where Zachary or Zachariah would slow you down in the CW contest.

Hi Vince....Im Vince too....and in operating over the last 30+years, I go by Vince for SSB/Phone qsos, and Vin for CW qso, to keep the sending short....it's worked out well.....Contests don't usually require giving your name, but that's how I do the qsos....

Here's a ham radio and names story for ya....my late friend was a CW operator and used his middle name when working code....his first name was Seth and his middle name was David....so for SSB qsos he went with Seth, and for code, it was Dave, as Seth just has one too many DITS in it....  ::)......Names can be tough to get thru sometimes.....

So far the only contest I have been in that requires a name as part of the exchange is the CWT. So far I have always used my son's name (Tim) because mine is just too long.
It's all good.

When you guys do a contest do you not verify your log?  In other words if I said my name is Jesus during the contest but used my callsign that says my name ain't Jesus it's Ron Johnson or whatever.

Who did you talk to during the contest?  Me or Jesus?

Carry on.

Obviously someone that has never worked a contest, but I wouldn't answer someone using a bogus call sign like above, so there.

I use the name of one of my deceased dogs in his honor.
On phone, its ZIGGY, on CW ZIG. (A bit quicker than ZIGGY on CW)
If someone wants to complain, have at it.
