2 meter FM RTTY Repeaters ?
« on: January 27, 2021, 02:42:47 PM »

What does anyone know about 2 meter FM RTTY Repeaters ?

What time frame was this?
What areas of the country had them?
When did they go away?
Did you ever use them?

"Many years ago, FM RTTY on VHF was quite common. The 146.10/.70 was commonly used for RTTY repeaters, and most were home to RTTY bulletin boards."

I grew up in So. California and owned several 2 meter repeaters from 1976 until I left California in 1997.
Never heard RTTY on any of the So. Cal. machines. The repeaters in those days were very busy and I can see why no one bothered with RTTY.

In the San Francisco Bay Area and Monterey Bay Area my friend and I operated a standard FM  split site repeater which was used for RTTY ...  we used Comodore C64 computers for the RTTY work.  Ran 90 Watts TX on Loma Prieta and the ultra sensitive receiver was 90 miles south on a 4000' solar only site.  It covered all of central California and a good portion up north and down south too.  This was in the early 80's.

We used to use FM RTTY via a repeater on Navy MARS in Virginia in the mid 1970's and 1980's. The daily traffic broadcast occurred before I got home from work each day so I built a processor that would automatically turn on the TTY machine whenever it detected the MD/DC routing indicator. I used an 11 element yagi at 60 feet and had solid copy.

FM RTTY can go through any voice repeater.  Of course if it's set up as a voice repeater one has to accommodate the timeout timers and timer resets but it works just fine.  SSTV also works through voice repeaters, in fact I've heard SSTV roundtable nets going over regular FM repeaters.

Davenport, IA had a RTTY repeater in the 80s on 146.70.  At some point it switched over to regular FM voice, probably in the 90s.  Still going as far as I know on voice.

There were several FM RTTY operators both on simplex and repeaters in the SNJ area during the 70s and 80s.  The emergence of PCs and packet killed them.

Several of us ran RTTY thru the Springfield Mo. Repeater in the early 70's, but a lot of the other users did not like listening to it, so we generally went off on simplex frequency's to send our RTTY pictures.

We also ran Texas Instruments TI-99-4a data over the Aurora repeater for a little while . I and others built an interface to utilize the old Cassette recorder audio transfer of data to our radios. It started with myself and Dave WA0RVK and others joined in.  But again there was pushback from the repeater users, and we gravitated towards simplex. We swapped basic language programs thru this interface over 2 meter FM.

Soon we all had IBM PC's or clones and the TI machines went by the wayside along with its Cassette recorder data storage protocol.  All ancient history stuff now.

Many years ago, early to mid 80's, I lived in Roanoke, VA.  There was a repeater in Bedford, VA, about halfway between Roanoke and Lynchburg with an RTTY net every night at 9 PM.  It was very popular.

There was talk of using underused 2m FM repeaters for packet radio.  Maybe they'd use a TNC to decode the received packet to confirm that it is in fact packet (and not voice) to allow the transmitter to repeat the received signal.  Making the received signal go thru a TNC as a digipeater may make for too much latency.

Don't know if anyone actually did this.

K6GWE on Mt. Tamalpais north of San Francisco was a RTTY repeater on 146.10-.70. I had a borrowed Model 28 printer in our bedroom of a mobile home in San Rafael. AIR, Irv Hoff, Jan Harvey WA6MGK/K9OOU, Stu K6VCO were among the active participants. This was later '70s.

I remember an article about a club repeater that
worked for both FM and RTTY simultaneously,
without interaction.

The repeater carrier was shifted for the RTTY signal,
using one of the standard HF shifts.  That permitted
the use of HF RTTY equipment with converters, and
the FM users didn’t notice.
