70 FT Long-wire Antenna & Alpha Delta Sloper - Continuity Tests
« on: January 28, 2021, 02:14:08 PM »

My two pride and joy antennas:  contractor building a screen porch on our house backed over the post that had the balun and grounding wire and etc., and in doing so really messed up the coax.  Visual inspection shows the antennas may be ok....i want to send current from each antenna to the PL-259 plugs that are well-indoors and can't just position together with the antennas to test with a single device.

What if I taped a 9 volt battery to one end and use my circuit tester on the other end?

Or, is there a method that makes far more sense?

Thx!

If I'm understanding what you are trying to do (verify the coax cables aren't cut) then you could do the following:

With an ohmmeter, check across the PL-259 connector (center to shield) with the antenna end not shorted. You should measure open. This will verify that the coax hasn't been shorted by crushing.

Next, place a short at the antenna end and check again with the ohmmeter at the PL-259 end. You should read a short this time, verifying that neither the shield or center conductor is cut (open).

It would be a good idea to look closely at all the exposed coax to make sure there are no cuts or pinches (flat spots) where the coax may have been run over and damaged by the contractor.

Even if the cable reads OK with an ohmmeter, the jacket still could have been nicked or cut, allowing moisture to enter. This will cause a deterioration of the cable's performance over time.
