Last night was pretty good on long wave
« on: February 03, 2021, 07:42:39 PM »

Last night was pretty good on long wave. I had beacons from Pensacola and Jacksonville Florida all the way to International Falls MN and Thunder Bay ON last night. And that Moroccan station peaked through on 171 khz here too. I'm just using a Cushcraft 4BTV for antenna. I wonder what would have got if I had a 500 long wire.

Excellent catches OM.  I've heard IL, SLP, YMW, LW, BRA, NM and QT here in NJ on good nights using a 31 foot vertical.  The challenge is when a few beacons are near to each other in frequency and you have to tune very slowly to separate them out.

DGPS beacons are still on and receivable.  I heard they'll eventually be gone.  Good thing is that we'll be able to hear whatever maritime beacons are still active. I remember when some beacons actually transmitted wx in AM.  Miss those.

The other night I heard a station in the new ham band, it was a series of different tones, not sure what mode they're using though.

No exactly long wave, but there used to be radio buoys from 1.7 - 2 mHz transmitting their odd call signs every few minutes in CW but don't know if they are still being used as marker buoys for commercial fisherman.

Thanks for sharing you reception report.

I concur with N2HUN. Excellent effort. I don't know much about this facet...so I plugged "Longwave Beacons" into my favorite search engine...

Icom IC-705. It runs circles around the FT-897 when comes to receiving.

Ive found the LF AM Broadcast Band a good listen at times with some 20-30 over 9 signals for hours.

Unfortunately many have gone dark due to decreasing audience and the cost of running up to a megawatt of power!

And if you really want to dig down real low try Swedish SAQ on 17.2 kHz They have a schedule on their web page and there are several others on Google so just type in SAQ Sweden.

I just read the wiki link posted above.
Here is a quote,
In Europe, Africa, and large parts of Asia (International Telecommunication Union Region 1), where a range of frequencies between 148.5 and 283.5 kHz is used for AM broadcasting.
So why don't I see those big Chinese internet companies selling LF radios, they sell so much other stuff thats meant for different regions already.

Are there any Asian stations still on?

This list is a bit outdated and is a good reason Chinese radios havent built any.
