need help setting up paths
« on: February 04, 2021, 04:59:27 AM »

I'm trying to get setup with APRS but cannot seem to get it working. I'm using aprsdroid with a smart phone, a wolphilink and a Yaesu FT-818. In aprs droid my setting are, smart beaconing, GPS is on, Frequency is set to 144.39 FM, my path is set to WIDE1-1, WIDE2-2. I can here packets coming in, My radio transmits and seems to be sending packets. When I look at APRSdirect, I don't show up on the map, I can see a repeater 10 miles away. I can also see that same repeater on aprsdroid sending packets. I'm using a Mobil mag mount antenna on the truck and can hit many repeaters in the area so I'm  thinking that I should be able to reach out and hit an aprs repeater. Any ideas on what I should try next? Also, can anyone explain what all the information is in the station history? Thanks for the help!!

OK, here's an idea. APRS is a "one shot" data transmission. It's not like some other data modes that keep sending until the receive station gets the data.

I used run APRS a lot, and also managed several APRS digipeaters. A rule of thumb to get "on the map"... good antenna, good power.

You... mag mount antenna... low power.

If you could put a metal mounted 5/8 wave antenna on your vehicle, you might be able to use the 818.

It's simple but check to ensure you are transmitting simplex.  My old FT897 now tasked as my APRS machine if I tune to the local APRS frequency in VFO mode it will automatically default in a negative shift.
