As you described, difficult but you'll work some stations. I've used a small mag loop with success.

Possibly you'll make a QSo.

Do you have an attic? that gives you options otherwise a mag loop right by the window may work, suggest the Alex Loop to start, cheers Geoff W6UXB

I don't know about 5 watts but I run 40 watts SSB on a Mag Loop indoors and have no problem hitting the West Coast. My elevation is only 135 feet. If you have some real elevation at your location QRP with a Magnetic Loop should get you out there.

My home made indoor magloop 40 -10m works OK.Good results with only 10W.Eu no problem at all, sometimes far DX happens.

Another nice magloop

I've made two QRP contacts with two indoor dipoles 10 feet of the ground.
FG5FR was worked on 12 meter CW in 2011 running 5 watts.
KV4AA in the Virgin Islands was worked on 20M CW in 1981 running 4 watts to a helically wound dipole just 6 ft from end to end!
Dick set the world record for QSOs in a year. He was the only one I was able to work from Philly with that indoor dipole.

Not well at all if your house has a metal roof and aluminum foil backed wall insulation.  A pretty decent Faraday Cage at HF frequencies.  ::)

Metal roof? Do they live in houses or sheds down South? ::)

Off topic, but yes, metal roofs are considered the "high-priced spread" down here...  Just sayin'  8)
Fortunately, my builder opted for the "chipper chicken" RF-transparent fiberglass shingles...

Actually, many commercial buildings, and even famous cathedrals,  have metal roofs.  Mine really looks nice on my 1200SF, 3 Bedroom, 2 Full Bathroom shed.  ::)

So I just had a 5 minute qso with a station in Minnesota using my indoor loop on 20 meters AM. My Loop was even pointed NE instead of NW. I guess I don't have a metal roof...  ;)

Yep. I have an MFJ 30-10 meter loop in the room just next to the shack, upstairs, in a wood frame house. A few years ago I was using the wattmeter on the antenna to peak the output on my Cub. (Hey I said "peak" I didn't say "measure".  ;D ) I heard a station calling CQ and had a nice contact with a W6 in CA. Then had another with a W1 in ME. I wouldn't necessarily want that to be my only antenna but if that's all I had I know it would possible.

Metal roofing on houses is more common than you might think. In Ohio, once you get out of the cities and into the rural areas, metal roofs on houses are pretty common. It's more expensive than traditional shingles. But it lasts twice as long (or longer) if properly installed.
