I use what the pros use to solder SMD's. It is a paste you dab on, then use something best described like a heat gun. Looks like a soldering iron station with a soldering pen that blows hot air. The are called SMD Re-Work Stations. However it does not require to have the air pen. Many home brewers just use a toaster oven.

Do you know if this Weller unit plugs in to the WTCPT base unit, that I already own?

It requires the Weller WD1M or WD2M base. The tweezers are nominally $300.00 plus tax plus shipping so around $350.00. The WD1M base is about $350.00 and with shipping and taxes it will come in close to $400.00. Rough estimate of the setup is $750.00.

Some online ads come in at lower prices but when trying to order they come back as out of stock.

While this set up is convenient, a cost effective alternative is the Weller Heat Gun seen here.

You heat the part area until the solder changes state and lift the part off with a vacuum pickup tool, regular tweezers or flick it off with an orange stick.  The solder tweezers with base is nice in a production environment but for onesie-twosies the heat gun bails you out of mischief.

To put a part back down use solder paste supplied in small tubular barrels. These are intended to be used with a holder that uses compressed air to push the plunger tip and dispense the paste. However you can buy plastic plunger stems that insert into the plunger tip and dispense the paste using a small diameter tip. The tips are usually plastic but if you have access to larger gauge needles for hypodermics they will work. Just be dang careful as explaining to the doctor in the ER how you managed to get solder paste under your hide or another persons can bring some strange entanglements that are expensive.

Once you have the paste down on the pads for the part, simply use a vacuum pickup or tweezers to place the part on the solder paste and press down till you stop. Then using the heat gun you can melt the solder paste. The paste will transition from a dull grey mix to an odd matte silver then suddenly take on a silver sheen. You will see the part wiggle as it self aligns on the pads. Remove the heat source and allow it to cool.

I've used SMD resistors and caps as replacements on vintage transistor radios from the 1960's.  These old circuit boards don't hold up real well if you try to poke new leads thru the holes.  So the use of SMDs.  I just solder one side of the SMD then the other. Sometimes I'll use some solderwick to clear a bulge of solder so I can get the SMD as flat to the board as I can get it when soldering the other side of the SMD.
