Turned out 2 of the old Spectra's I have still work. Must have been static between the earphones. So for now I'm fine, and I did replace all the caps years ago. But there's still something wrong with them, when they unsquelch, they click. If they work right they don't do that. It was my experience that replacing the 'warp board', the PLL circuit, fixed the problem, but of course that stuff is now unobtanium. I'll use them until they die, or I do, hard to say which will come first at this point.

Thanks for the hints.

FYI, those HB Spectra T53VBJ units probably have the 60W output PA, which you can adjust down to 1/2 power (30W).  If you have already replaced all the electrolytics, unplugging and reseating the PLL board often quiets the 'pop on unsquelch' issue.  But NEVER directly ground either side of the speaker audio output, it is DC coupled and will blow the output stage!

It's nice to see all the helpful comments here on the forum

Not sure what they are selling for now, but earlier this year I bought an Alinco DR-135 MkIII and like it very much. Plenty of memory channels, three power settings, easy to manually program, well-written manual.  No downside to this radio.  Note that I use it as a base, not mobile.

Hope you find a radio to suit your needs. 73's de N2HUN.

Should read the owner’s manual before you jump to conclusions, it specifically warns you the radio gets hot and to be careful with placement.

No downside to this radio.

Pray nothing dies inside of it.  They're built out of unobtanium.
