We already have more now than ever before including more activity evidenced by number of hams posting on cluster networks, reporters, numbers in contests, more events, etc... than ever before. That you didn’t answer the question -why?  Is indicative of the lack of need.

These discussions have been on-going for decades and do nothing except identify solutions to non-existent problems.

Hi, Don. What do you see in terms of local club activity, repeater activity, hamfest attendance, etc? Thanks for your note.  Quin, K8QS

I’m not active on any repeaters. As to hamfests and club meetings, it’s hard to compare activity levels during a pandemic. What leads you to believe there is any need or benefit to increasing quantity?

Don, I am thinking about it in terms of bringing joy to other, potential hams. Thanks for your notes. Quin, K8QS

I, as do many others, wish that our ranks would expand, not so much for the sake of numbers, but for the hopes of folks who might find an interest in experimenting, kit building, modifying, etc. I'd like to see the electronics part of hamming grow, but not with HT users that may never burn themselves on a soldering pencil, but with the inquisitive ones that can properly/try to repair their equipment and, in doing so, build up the good will of the general public.

In "my day" we had our share of hams that messed up the local TV programs, but the way hi-tech has progressed it's almost a thing of the past today. (Forgetting the multitude of appliances that create the noises we now call "normal".) We need those that want to pick up where we left off, as it were. Sans the TVI, RFI, etc. LOL

I would also appreciate seeing the code brought back, if only 5 WPM. That, in itself, would show the willingness of newbees, (like we all had "in my day",) to earn their tickets to the wonderland called Ham Radio.

I realize there are those that thoroughly enjoy hamming as it is, but this is only an old fogies dream and, according to the Good Book, you must forgive me. Hi

I'm not active on any repeaters either.  Maybe we should start to be to increase activity.

True and hams were the driving force and why all commercial operators got as far from HF as possible so all hams could interfere with is with themselves. Even commercial AM broadcast has fallen and will never come back. No static at all, FM

I would also appreciate seeing the code brought back, if only 5 WPM.
Never going to happen. Texting and emails are much faster and efficient to anyone in the world any time of day or night. Today ham radio is to men what quilting is to women. That does not attract many folks. Times changed. In the 50/60/and early 70's ham radio was popular to those interested in electronics. Not today, electronics changed, and the mystery of radio is long gone.

LJW: I do not believe that the mystery of radio is "long gone". I must admit that it has been replaced(??) by all the hi tech that has been developed, but, in a way, that in itself has produced a lot of questions for those inquisitive folks I mentioned. As long as there are those that say, "What", "why", "how", etc there will be room for either an improvement or a reinvention no matter what the subject, electronics being the one I have enjoyed for so many years and will until I'm called away. (On the other side I'll find out just how close to a successful project I came, back when I put it on the "later" pile. (And I'll wish I had thought of the fix and not given up! So close and yet so far!) LOL

No! I do not believe the mystery of radio is gone. I can also imagine the TV junkies that sadly miss the wonders of the black and white sets that had its own share of quirks that they were able to discover and repair. For every hobby/addiction, there's a devout following that will one day "shed a tear" for the old days. And, again, I admittedly fall into that class, with no regrets whatsoever. I have two loves in my life, Lois and radio. Please don't condemn me for it. (Neither of which I can say I comfortably understand!)  :'( ;D

If your love of radio is so strong you would not be on this website or the internet at all.  It's like saying I love the internet but I don't use my computer.  You are on here night and day.  If your love is so strong, turn your computer off and get on the radio.
