With SDR radios there really are no limits to what can be done. To bad the code is not open source, then you could get a lot more  interest in ham radio.

A bit to late as non ham radio experimenters can already buy an SDR Transceiver operating 1 MHz to 6 GHz enabling them to TX or RX any frequency, any bandwidth with any kind of modulation used today and tomorrow. Catchy name too, HackRF One.

Well, the available processing power and memory does rather limit them. I would have liked to see ICOM devote more effort - and more CPU to improving the DSP rather than these rather cosmetic UI improvements...

True but that is manufacture and model specific. Suspect ICOM has it stripped down. Commercial radios have been doing it for two decades now. There is absolutely no reason an ham radio cannot operate from 160 Meters to 23 cm in an HT and work any mode. Make the Amp a modular unit and you can have it all in the cell phone form factor with only one button.  8)

What is kind of funny today is they have to make electronics larger than necessary. There is no reason to have cell phones so dang large. All you gotta do is get rid of the screen and the blind operator with 10 fat finger Those QRP rigs could be a wrist watch Dick Tracy. Forgot, we already got em.

Those of you that have already upgraded your radios already know this, but newcomers are often stumped by the fact that you MUST press the second yes button on the 2nd disclaimer screen as a press and hold, NOT just a simple press. Dave's you-tube video missed this as well.

Also for those of you that don't know when you unmount and then remove the SD card you simply press in and release the card and it will pop out a little bit from the slot on the radio and then you can pull it out. In most PC slots you don't have this mechanism, you just push it in part way until it bottoms out, and then you go thru the "safely eject" thing on your pc then just pull it out.  You would be surprised by the simple things that stop success for first timers.  Even the right click, copy paste, operation stops a lot of people..

Its true, one my first upgrade I was stumped for a few minutes, until I  found that the 2nd screen wouldn't respond without a holding press, this happens to be my 2nd and I hadn't forgot that press hold.

I watched his video and realized I have not backed up my radio settings onto a computer as he shows in the video. I have 3 different Icoms I could do that for. It is possible for Old Dogs to learn new tricks.

Unless the radio has a network connector.  One can connect a modern networked SDR up to a Mac, PC, Raspberry Pi, Android device, iPad, or iPhone.  And even a small iPhone might contain several GB of memory and more Gigaflops of DSP compute power than Cray supercomputers of a just a couple decades past.  Some of the networked SDRs even have an open source software ecosystem, or at least, manufacturer provided APIs.
