Already have all mode VHF/UHF with my FT-857D, and 897D.
Fusion is a separate radio for me with an FTM-7250D. I like all the above very much.

But if the 857/897 ever gives up the ghost, I'll likely replace them with a 991A.

Then again, I'm kind of a fan of the Yaesu "shack in a box" type rigs.
Mine have served me very well over the years, and have been exceptionally reliable.
And having all mode capability everywhere is certainly nice to have.

If Yaesu made the FT991A with the guts of the FTDX10 there would be an easy answer but the RX lab numbers on the 991A is kind of almost 20 year old technology, yes it has 3Khz roofing filters but there shape factor and front end design is to make the radio appeal to the everywhere station in a box not anywhere near the raw good performance of the 7300. Yes the new Ten best the 7300 but not by a whole hell of allot, I have owned both and the 7300 doesn't lose much at all on a direct A/B comparison plus the on board display Icom is the clear winner were Yaesu is way behind in this regard and on the 10 the 3D display is a Tonka Toy, totally worthless, BTW I do own the 10, its a good RX but IMO both the 10 and the 101D/MP need serious display upgrades. The Yaesu FT991A is still better than that DOG of a radio Kenwood still has out, the TS2000 was the worst HF radio I have ever listened to, its a great radio if you wanna hear everyone on a band at once!

If Yaesu made the FT991A with the guts of the FTDX10 there would be an easy answer ...

I would love to see a clear statement of just what the difference between the FTDX10 and the FT-991A is! The block diagram is almost identical - as is the processor. They both mix the RF down to a 24kHz IF which is then digitised and the remainder of the processing is in the digital domain. The prices are pretty similar - I can't get away from the impression that they are almost identical but some bright marketing man coined the phrase "hybrid SDR" for the FTDX10...

A quick glance at the Sherwood test date makes it clear enough ....  the FTDX10 has a much more robust Rx than the FT-991 does.  the FTDX10 has 8 dB better wideband blocking, much cleaner LO noise, 11 dB better wideband dynamic range, and 35 dB narrowband dynamic range.

Some of that may be due to DSP filtering and software, but the most dramatic performance differences would imply some rather advanced LO synthesizer and Rx frontend design techniques (ahead of the digitizer) in the FTDX10.   The block diagram is often only a superficial representation of the product.

Like others have said already, I would be keen to see an FTDX10-type of FT-991A radio coming along.

In the instance where a ham has an FT-991A and upgrades to a better HF rig, he can keep the FT-99A as 1) VHF/UHF all mode rig 2) Backup rig for HF.

I do like the aforementioned idea of a FT-DX10 with VHF/UHF capabilities, that would be reason to trade in the FT-991A and it would serve as an even better HF backup.
