I have also noticed postings from new hams that want the older hams to do all their research for a new or used  product.

Younger and new hams have better things to do with free time like work, be productive, and have a family to take care of.  Older retired hams sit around all day talking about important things like the weather, how sick and tired they are, and what equipment they have all day long.

I got into "radio" in the early 40's and after 20+ years had to drop out. (Family, etc.)

After about 25 years absence I reentered to discover a whole new world existed. I couldn't begin to guess how many times I had to ask what I considered a basic fundamental question. But, with a red face, I asked.
To my surprise I received many answers. It was very humiliating for me to ask, but ask I did.

I owe these folks for most of the knowledge I've gained since finding this forum and it hurts to hear others rag on about how "lousy" it is. Gratitude is what I've highly developed because of these folks! They've been great "mentors" to this old far...fogy. (oops) ::)

I don't complain about my aches and pains, (being well past retirement age), but accept things as they come along, one step at a time. Time has a way of showing it to be the only way in this life. (While enjoying hamming and repairing.)

I have found that, for the most part, forum members are helpful in addressing the problems or questions I have posted.

However there are a few that always seem to disparage my posts. It is always the same ones.
Its always negative or worthless replies that certainly would turn off a newbie if they were the poster.

But I guess that's what you find on all forums. Forums seem to be a magnet for those type of people most times hiding in anonymity with little of value to say.

I wonder how many would act that way if they had an actual call sign listed. Maybe nothing would change :-\

Maybe it all comes down to poor manners from those who never were taught the "If you have nothing nice to say........don't say anything at all"

Anybody who has kids is used to that by now.  Per Harry Chapin (died 41 yeas ago) it's been that way for quite a while:  "What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys.  See ya later...   can I have them, please?" (Cat's Cradle lyrics).

But - I take it out in trade.  Son #2 is coming by tonight to cook and serve dinner.  And of course i'll take this opportunity to stick my parenting nose into his business and "advise" him on all sorts of things.  So will Mom.   Not too shabby.  Food and entertainment all in one visit!

Its nice not to have blinking adds in every corner and edge of each page. I visited the other forum that has tons of adds in every column.
It made me wonder why we don't have that here.

Well I am a guest or visitor or whatever (non PC person) as do not , yet, pay to support the site.
Agree with Glenn for the most part.
Am one of those "silly old fools" that just wants to give new Hams the benefit of years of experience.
It should not be held against older Hams that they grew up in a different time when working on 3KV amps was the normal day to day experience. When seeing a reply from a specific set of individuals one can usually figure that it is going to be critical of some prior reply, advice or opinion. That is just who they seem to be. To use the modern term IMHO they are just persons that come across as wound a bit tight. But then I am just a silly old fool so my opinion, advice or knowledge does not count. One thing about operating on the air is that one can always cut short a QSO if there is some reason to run. The same applies here, just ignore replies from those from whom one knows what to expect. (easier said than done). The problem with that is that the forum suffers.

We, as parents, have to accept responsibility for some of what we created. Now there is a scary thought! At least so far we can not be held accountable for those transgressions. If only the "ignore" key in my head just worked better these pesky issues would go away. ::) Good DX to all.

The bickering is a result of allowing silly old fools called Elmers who give horrible dangerous advise with contempt for safety and modern operating practices. Do you not realize you can be held liable if someone comes here and gets bad dangerous advise.

eHam is no more liable for misinformation, bad advice, and all-around BS from some of its posters than Twitter, Facebook, or any other social media site.  We are solely responsible for what we post here.

DIY forums are not media outlets and responsible for their content. I moderate on two forums, only one today, and both are electrical related and have had law suits filed against them. One resulted in the forum shutting down and never went to court as the owner could not afford to fight. The other settled out of court because it was less expensive to do so. Today the surviving forum doe snot allow for incorrect answers. With 20 moderators, and over 500,000 members who know their stuff will not tolerate anyone giving bad or incorrect advise.

You can sue anyone for anything. With internet forums the acid test in court is: The “assumption of responsibility”. Was the advice offered in circumstances where the person providing the advice knew or ought to have known that the person to whom the advice was given would rely on that advice?

Tell them to ignore electrical and safety codes, they get hurt or have property damage, guess what can happen? The owner of this site has clearly stated this forum was placed here to teach hams how to break the rules. Otherwise as he says the forum would not exist.

Then don't get into ham radio. Do your parents still feed you daily? Does you mom do your laundry because your are so special? I know it is hard being an adult and having a hobby you have to handle yourself. I wonder who did your homework if you were busy with school sports?

DIY forums are not media outlets and responsible for their content.

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (1996) says otherwise.  Doesn't matter if the website is a message board, blog, social media company, or anything else.  The page below not only explains it, but links to the actual text of the law.

eHam cannot be held legally responsible for what its members post, even though the mods are allowed to edit or remove anything that they don't like.  Including us.  They can't be held liable for that, either.  Their site, their rules.
