Hi,

Have you checked with your ARRL Section Manager...especially the Section Club Liaison?

Considering the interest in the hobby and club enthusiasm today you can be the Chairman, Treasure, the only member, and can make all the rules. Don't forget free beer night.

Being that I'm officially qualified, at the tender age of 62, to make a non-official, non-binding, but very serious request? The swill of choice, and this is a Universal Truth mind you- is that PBR is the finest beer in the land! Proven in old-geezer dive bars all across the the 'States. God Bless America! And the old Queen. She's got troubles you see... lol
May I extend a premature "thank you"?

Phil
here is what I did years ago.  On QRZ enter you zip code and it will list all the hams in that zip code.  Then send an email and invite them to start a club.  This should give you a core group.  When I had this core group and we had a club name we started a newsletter and mailed to all the hams in our zip code;  Within a year we had 50 club members with about 35 to 40 in attendance each meeting.  Having a program is a big must.

73 and good DX

There are eight ARRL affiliated clubs within an hour's drive of you.

You can find them by entering your ZIP Code here:
http://www.arrl.org/find-a-club

Any particular reason you want to form another one?

To me PBR is not as good since they closed the brewery in Milwaukee.

Sadly Stan, you're right.
If pushed up against a wall...
I can live with a Miller High Life.
But PBR is still my fav. swill... very full bodied...
and dee-lish!
Be well   :)

The first question one ought to ask is:

"What is the purpose of the club?"

I have known many clubs of long standing and the one thing they have is some sort of fairly clear mission.

Some are organized around building and maintaining a local repeater.  Others are organized around special interests like DXing or contesting.

What would happen at a meeting of your group?  Would it be monthly meetings at a community college with some kind of program?  An over the air weekly net?  All kinds of things are possible.  But what do you want?  More importantly, what local ham need is going unmet?

A little focus might help you find members -- if I lived near you, I'd want to know "why should I join."

There are a few general purpose clubs out there, but even these tend to have some kind of focus (e.g. "field day", "VE testing") as a core part of what they do.

If you just want to sit around and drink beer, you can organize a local get-together at a suitable bar.  I know people who do things like that (we had a Saturday morning breakfast club for years) and they didn't bother with all the hoopla and paraphernalia of a club for something so simple.

I've been a charter member of several club 'starts'.  But saying that, it is really hard to understand what that means.  In all three cases, the rest of the charter members and I had been doing things together that were group things before we decided we were a club.  I guess the big difference between the day before starting the club and the day after was that we decided we had a name and that we had started.  But in all cases, we also had a purpose or thing.  In the first club's case it was to meeting regularly and to keep tabs on the place and space where we would meet.  We also decided to do an activity together, as a club.
In the latter two cases. the thing we were doing came first, and making the name up was just a way to tell people about it.  The ARRL and banks and lawyers were not involved until much later.
In 2021, things are very different than in 1989.  First off, there are domain names and web pages to make.  Pretty much every club has an email address or web page or both.  But that's not what makes the club.  Anybody can volunteer to have that.  I think the big deal about club vs not club, is the repeat performance.  Whatever it is you are doing, you'll do it again or more of it.  Who is doing it?  Oh, it's the club doing it.  Super.

So the question is, who is meeting?  And why?  And will a name help?  Do you need to recruit and promote?  Is money involved?
