Trane Furnace RFI
« on: March 11, 2021, 07:43:59 AM »

I have two Trane high efficiency HVAC's in my home.  UH2C100 series. six years old.  The one closest to my outside dipole is quiet, no noticeable RFI on 20 meters.  The other, which is further away on other side of house, has RFI.  Models are identical and installations seem comparable.

I get about an S6 broadband noise when the draft fan on the noisy furnace starts.  RFI continues after main blower comes on, but possibly at a bit lower level.  Checking with AM radio, RFI is strong in immediate vicinity of top and bottom sections of furnace.

My plumbing and gas lines are PFC so I believe the only grounding to either HVAC is via the AC power back to the service panel.

I installed several clamp-on ferrites on wiring to draft and main blowers.  No difference.

Any thoughts on why difference between the two units and what I might do next (other than wait for summer)?

I had the same problem with my newish Trane furnace. I questioned the contractor who installed it and he had a Trane rep come out and put ferrites and some other stuff on the furnace. The noise is reduced but I still get some noise from the induction motor on 75 and 40 meters. I grounded everything to electrical and rf grounds and that did not seem to help any.
Perhaps you can call your Trane guy for the same stuff they put in mine.

What bands are affected by the RFI?

I only have operated on 20M, but broadcast band RFI (using transistor radio near furnace) is loud, so I suspect quite broad-banded.

What seems peculiar is that both are identical and the closest furnace is quiet.

There is a PDF presentation on the ARRL website covering this issue.
