Keying mirage B-2518-G with Kenwood TS-711
« on: March 29, 2021, 10:22:43 AM »

I have the relay cord for this radio. Can I connect it to the RCA jack on the amp or should I add the ARB -704 xcvr to amp interface? Thanks in advance.

Looking at the pinouts in the manuals, it appears that the rig has no provision for a key line to
amp cable.

You will have to depend on the RF sensing of the amp to do the switching.

Or wire a parallel keying circuit for both transceiver and amp.

Ok, thank you...I may have to do that. I want to avoid rf sensing unless the amp provides a delay since the reason for getting the amp is for SSB operation.

The '2518 has a mode switch on it.  In the CW/SSB position there will be a delay activated in the RF sense circuit.

On the back of the TS-711, there is a “mini” jack (1/16” I think).  It is labeled “Send”.  I was able to wire up a cable to my B-310g (has 1/8” relay jack on the back). With the drive control turned all the way ccw (3w) , my TS-711 drives the amp to a bit over 100w out.  No more “relay chatter” on SSB.  Does not seem to matter what position the front panel switch (SSB/FM) is placed.  T/R is immediate with no delay.  Give it a try...

Yes that's the key line. It goes low along with the PTT circuit and thus the amp. Apparently works OK for SSB, with no delay.

Here's an explanation of how that rig is keyed and how to modify it for non-break-in CW:

Wow, thanks all. Can't wait to get the amp and try, 73!

On the rear of an unmodified TS-711A there are two 3.5mm jacks labelled  Ext Sp. and Key.  Their application is obvious.

There is a 2.5mm jack between them that is labelled Stby.  I examined the schematic and found that there is no transistor on that SS line that pulls to ground for external use.  I believe that the Stby jack is to be used with an external PTT switch or for computer-based operation of the PTT line, as it would be convenient if tying in a computer for digital work.

Neither the instruction manual or the service manual have much to say about the Stby jack.

There is no jack labelled 'Send' on a '711/'811 unless it was added as part of a modification.

Cheers and 73
