6M noise
« on: March 29, 2021, 01:17:54 PM »

Hello all,
I've been away from the hobby for a while, so please excuse me if this is a dumb question! On 50MHZ, when I let off the mic, I hear a twang noise. I am using a super discone antenna for now. That will soon change! My radio is an FTDX1200. I have tried lower power, etc. The station is grounded properly, but I don't have the antenna grounded before it comes in the house. Possible source? I do have a SWL antenna on the same side of the house. It is grounded before coming in. And both are connected to the radio. Any help is appreciated!

"The station is grounded properly".

No. It is not grounded properly.

" I do have a SWL antenna on the same side of the house. It is grounded before coming in"

No. It is not.

"On 50MHZ, when I let off the mic, I hear a twang noise."

Probably Fang-Fang's grandfather calling from Wouhan.

Real nice reply, obviously something lacking is causing  that person to make an
inflamatory post. Maybe he needs some attention.

Yeah, I figured I would get some newbie "you're a dumba**" replies. Just trying to do things right. Don't want to damage my equipment but want to make contacts on the frequencies I am allowed to.

The first thing I would do is put it on a dummy load and see if you still have the problem. If so then you know the problem is in the radio. If not, it's an antenna issue like perhaps RFI getting into the radio.

All grounds should be a single point location, not willy nilly wherever it is convenient. I doubt grounding is your problem and easy to prove. Disconnect all ground wires, if noise goes away, you have a ground problem. If the noise stays, something else like an AGC acting up.

I do have all the grounds going to a single point-ground bar. And going out to a ground rod right outside. The AGC was something I thought about as well, just couldn't find the settings on it. The dummy load ideas is a great direction to go. Thank you guys for the suggestions.

Richard, The best advice I can offer is to contact a local experienced HAM. An on-site visit is a valuable tool.

Thank you Joe. I live right around the corner of what is left of the base! Boeing is the biggest thing left there. We do have a great club locally and that is great advice!

Grounding has nothing to do with twang wang fang.
But before worrying about some perceived "noise"...
life/safety issues need to be taken care of first...

"I do have all the grounds going to a single point-ground bar. And going out to a ground rod right outside."

It is obvious that a qualified electrician needs to be called in to tear that mess out before a fire or someone is electrocuted...and to bring the electrical/grounding system  up to code standards.
