FT-817 Alaska Frequency
« on: April 06, 2021, 12:51:14 PM »

Brushing the dust off my FT-817ND here.  As I was cycling through the various menu items, I noticed the menu #28 Emergency does not have an ON/OFF option to select.  Now I have no plans to go to Alaska anytime in the near future.  However, I was curious why this menu setting isn't working as written in the manual.  Is there some connection that has to be made before it gives me the option to turn that frequency on or off?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

73 in advance.

The Yaesu FT-847 (aka Earth Station) was introduced primarily as a satellite rig.  It's a pretty good 'shack in a box' radio.  The Alaskan Emergency Frequency function is explained on page 59 of......dare I type the words........the manual.

Ironically, the 847 has no VOX function.  Yaesu's story is 'AMSAT operators don't need VOX'.  Inrad came out with an external 'vox box' to cover the unfortunate oversight.

WOW!!!! I gotta clean these glasses more often.

In that case, go to page 57 of the FT-817 instruction manual for procedures on activating the 5167.5 KHZ Alaskan Emergency Frequency function.

Interesting thing I found was that you can program a 60 mtr channel into that memory channel, so you can have 1 - 60mtr channel without mod's the radio.

I would suggest that one be on the 60m digi freq - 5.3370MHz.

That would be 5.357 for digi on 60 meters.

I liked Yaesu's explanation for leaving VOX off of the FT847.  But then they include a transmit monitor.  If there is one thing satellite operators don't need it is a transmit monitor, since you can hear yourself on the downlink.

That took just under 6 hours for multiple posts to take this off the rails.  Again, I know how to turn the emergency frequency on per the manual.  However, when I bring up that menu item there is NO on/off choice displayed.  It is blank above the word Emergency.  Any thoughts on why it isn't showing the way the manual says it should?  Yes I bought this in the USA and yes it is an ND variation.  Please don't go off-topic.

Check what is the tunable low frequency range for the FM broadcast band - 76 MHz or 87.5 MHz? Have you performed the software broad banding modification?

My early 817's "on-off" appears and functions as the manual says it should.

Maybe try a full reset ?

The WFM tunes all the way down to 76MHz which if memory serves was the bottom of the FM dial in Japan.  But the manual says the radio should be able to receive that low regardless of model (USA vs non-US).

I'm not sure about a software widebanding.  This is the ND variant which I've read requires solder-work to change the bands.

I've done a factory reset by doing the Power+Home step.  That changed nothing for me.

Solved my own issue everyone.  The Radio is apparently not a US version despite buying it from Gigaparts.  It is an ND but using CHIRP I was able to see that it does not have the M-601 through M-605 memories.  It's capped at 200 memory blocks and to me that says its missing the USA mod adding 60M.  I guess I'll have to live with never calling for help in Alaska and I'll have to manually add 60M to my 200 memory spots.
