Dr. Phil therapy sessions??
« on: April 18, 2021, 06:51:10 AM »

I've recently noticed some "off-putting" classified ads that make me wonder if the seller really wants to sell the item. The ads are full of sarcasm and eyebrow raising comments that almost infer "I dare you to buy from me" ::). Statements like "NO TIRE KICKERS!", "No Dr. Phil therapy sessions" (what's with that anyway?), etc, to me are a real turn-off. These guys need a class on advertising ;). I picture them as crabby old men, the kind that say "get off my lawn!" ;D.

I guess they've had their fill of low-ball offers in the past, but it seems they're always the ones with unrealistic "firm" prices, close to buying it from a vendor at retail with a warranty. It seems to me they're cutting off their nose to spite their face. Negotiating offers are part of the deal when selling used equipment. Sometimes an offer can be as little as asking for free shipping on a $4,000 item. Push cones to shove, the seller can always say no. But if they shun offers from the start, it can mean a long time in the classifieds, or not selling it at all.

Just my observation ;).

Can imagine if you made a purchase and something went wrong? Seems to me you are already dealing with a difficult person. I would overlook the sale and buy from a "normal" person.
I haven't sold anything on eham, I wonder if these sellers are getting lowball offers, I am pretty sure there a few scammers at work as to be expected.

When I see those type of sellers, I don't even bother to negotiate. You know where it's going-nowhere.
It's amusing, too, when the price is near or in some cases more than the item is currently sold for new!
I suppose the fact that it's "his" is the value added part?

I'll add another "crusty quote". " My prices never go down, they only go up!"

I'm curious what a "Dr Phil session" is also.

Just to add about the fact that some seem not to want to sell the item they are trying to sell. I would say that the last half dozen I have contacted quoting" if it still available, I'll take it," have never bothered to reply. In the 48 years I've been a ham I have sold quite a few items and have always responded. Even to say that it has been sold. Courtesy is a rare commodity these days.

As we speak there's a seller on QRZ that doesn't want any tire kickers or any Dr. Phil types. Here's our chance to learn. WOOHOO !!!!

When I see an ad like that I have to think that the seller has been obnoxious and offputting their entire life up to and including when they placed the ad. My thinking is that they have gotten a lot of blowback due to their non-existent personal skills and don't know what the problem is, the just don't want the blowback... the assessment of transaction risk goes way up when I see that kind of thing and typically I won't let them make me work hard to get the deal closed, either it's real, it's fun, it doesn't have to be real fun but it's got to not get into the risky end of business too much before I just go do something else that suits my goals...

When I see ads like that, from people like that, I don't even bother inquiring.
Not the kind of people I want to deal with. Life is too short to put up with that kind of drama.

Bottom line, if you want to act like a crusty old jerk, you can keep your gear, and I'll keep my money.
Because if it's an item I really want, I will look elsewhere. Used radios for sale are kind of like waiting for a transit bus. If you miss this one, don't worry, because there will be another one that comes along in a little while.

Don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with buying used gear, or buying it from a private individual. But there's a bit of an art to selling used gear successfully as a private individual. In order to close the deal, both parties have to work together to make it mutually beneficial. There's a bit of give and take involved from both sides.

Yes, most likely "OLD". Unfortunately, you don't see many twentysomethings in ham radio any more. Check out pictures in the magazines and on the websites ;).
