Hi. I got the bug  for a new radio early this month amd ordered a FT-891. Now, they say it won’t come until June 8th.  Then, I started to look at the G90 and expected to be unimpressed. However, the more I read about it, the more impressed I get. It looks like it would be nice for outdoor, fair weather  portable operations at the local park. I like the CW digital filters and the waterfall display, as well as the antenna tuner. A lower power radio would not need as large of a battery. In addition, I want a radio to bring out on the deck to run to a 31 foot random wire fed with a 9:1 unun.

I did see that the G1M model they have had problems with input and output jacks getting loose and did not know if this radio had that problem. Then, I got to worrying that if they build the G1M poorly is this how the G90 is?  I have a IC706 Mark I that I giot about 25 or so years ago, and the FT-891 was just an upgrade for that. (My IC-706 is a little deaf, but built like a Russian tank.)
So, what do you guys think?  Would you go with the FT-891 or with the G90?

Hi Joe

How have you been? Long time no chat. Is that the IC-706 you got at the pawn shop for a ridiculous low price?  ;D We used it in my F-150 when we went to Dayton.
Do you still have all of your old boat anchors?

Update: I've had the G90 for several days now and have put it through a lot of "testing". It has worked 100% according to spec and I have had several CW contacts using my dipole hamsticks and Tarheel antenna. Biggest "problem" I had was with one control that wasn't working correctly. Turns out the instructions were incorrect (ever hear of that?) and with help from groups.io I got the right info and it also works properly now. I have the radio in a Harbor Freight suitcase with Lipo4 battery (that lasts forever at 16Ah), key, mic, etc. All ready for portable and POTA work. All that's left is to get my lazy --- out of the chair writing replies and see the great outdoors! Any suggestions on how to do that? LOL. I am glad I bought it. So far it has been a lot of fun. Go for it.
BTW, get the stand/fan accessory too. It is a good addition. I've even installed a mod to switch the fan on/off instead of on all the time...very nice.

So did you get one? Said I'd update (from original post of 5/3) and here it is:
G90 working great. It takes a little getting used to but otherwise I'm 100% satisfied. Filters are superb! Receiver is excellent. I use it with a "Super Antenna MP-1C" (look it up) and that's all. I do 99% CW but figured I'd finally try some SSB to get audio reports. Made two SSB contacts yesterday. One in TN with very good reports (17M) and then...drum roll please...I was floored when I worked Italy on TWENTY meters with good report...with the portable MP1-C antenna sitting in the driveway!!! BTW, the Super Antenna is very well machined...in America. Has proven to be a great, small, quick portable antenna to work with the G90. Let's hear from you now! 73
