Can you adapt a mic plug?
« on: May 16, 2021, 05:41:00 AM »

Is it ok to build a six inch long adapter patch to go from one mic plug / wiring config to another?

I would like to adapt an 8 pin Kenwood to 8 pin yaesu.

Heil and some independent sellers on-line offer just such adapters, as a quick search will show.  If it is wired neatly and correctly there should not be a problem.

You didn't mention the brand of mike and the model of radio.

Yaesu FT990 and Kenwood mc60.

The short answer is yes.
However you need to know if the microphone element is an electret type ( which needs DC power) or a dynamic which generates its out put by the movement of a coil over a magnet.
If you put a dynamic on an input designed for an electret, you will burn it out unless you insert a coupling capacitor to block the DC.
so:
1) determine what type of mike you have
2) determine what the radio was designed to work with.

After these have been figured out, an adapter can be built.

The MC 60 mic is defiantly a dynamic mic. Not sure what the Yaesu requires though.

Defiant mics are a problem!

I have a adapter made by Kenwood, that allows me to connect a 6-pin mic to a 4-pin mic connector. I use it on my SB-101. It's only about 2 inches long. The shell opens up and there are quick-disconnect wires inside for reconfiguration. I bought it a long time ago, but you may be able to find one on Ebay.

But, as SWMAN suggests, make sure you know what kind of microphones, you are using. They sometimes require a little more than just a wire adjustment.

Likely in the appliance manual or from looking at the schematic

The Yaesu defiantly uses a dynamic mic.   ;D
