Solid dual band mobile
« on: May 17, 2021, 11:42:20 PM »

For a while I've had an Icom 2100 2m rig.  It's underpowered, the QRN and audio are terirble, and I can only be understood on repeaters within 5-7 miles even with a decent j-pole set-up.  I don't have much money to replace it, so I'm looking for solid used dual rig.  Only modern requirements are the usual built-in tones and alphanumeric display.  Recommendations for 2m only accepted to.  But the noise has got to go and a good signal in it's place. I don't have this problem with my other rigs.  Open to Alinco and all major brands.  Thanks from KE2SJ.

Do your other rigs have a good signal using the same J pole antenna as the Icom 2M rig?

You can get a monoband 2 meter 80 watt Yaesu for less than $150 new..I can hit repeaters 12 miles away no problem on lower wattage,( I could probably do better, but the next closest is around 40 miles away with hills in between) and the audio is great.

I would offer up the Kenwood TM-V71.  It has been around for several years and has an excellent rep at a dual band rig.  I have two; one in the shack and the other in my go-kit.  Its' features and advantages are almost too numerous to mention in this venue.  I would point you to the 'Product Reviews' and consider the user evaluations.

Obviously you missed the part where he stated " I don't have much money to replace it"

I have a Yeasu FT-8800 in my van. Been working great for years and the price on used ones is coming down since they don't do digital (Fusion).

The noise is likely not at all a fault of the radio. The range you describe points to an antenna problem.

That said, for about $125 you can get a 25w dual band mobile from Anytone on Amazon. Cheap thrills. I have one.  AT-778UV.

Yaesu FT-7900R for a used dual band and a Yaesu FT-1900R for a used 2 meter radio.

A known good pre-owned IC-208H is a good choice. In the used market
these are approximately in the $125 to $150 area.

I would NOT suggest the QYT 8900D which is a 25 watt Dual Band Mobile.I am returning mine after maybe 2 hours of actually talk time since December 2020.No output on the 440 band but full output on 2 meters where it was never used.Buy an ICOM & the 880H that was suggested is a great choice & you can buy them for about the costs of the D-STAR Board with a D-STAR Board installed even if you never use the D-STAR part.

My other radios have some noise, but not like the Icom 2100 I'm trying to replace.  And it only puts out 35-40w when it used to go a solid 50w.  The j-pole (Ed Fong) is surprisingly not bad.  But I digress.  I'm looking for something that would go for under $200-225 or so used.  I don't want to buy one of the Amazon specials.  I plan an antenna upgrade at some point, but that 2100 has been through hell and is even missing it's tuning knob.  Any suggestions given this clarification?  Thanks to all...
