Looking for advice
« on: May 23, 2021, 11:40:23 AM »

I had a Yaesu FT 857D for sale and a guy on the east coast calls and said he had a couple of questions. He told me that he is not a ham but wants to become one and that he has a 11 meter background. He asked me does it have the mod? I told him its original with no mods and he says no problem I can get the mods I want. I agreed in principle to sell it to him but no money has changed hands. He will not have enough money for another week. Now I'm worried that I agreed to sell to a cb'er thats gonna use it on 11 meters and who knows where else. Is there a mod that will open the rig up? I'm thinking about calling this off. Thoughts?

Brian,

Yes, there is a fairly trivial "MARS" mod that includes 11 meter operation. Personally, I try to never facilitate illegal operation.

If you have to talk yourself in to doing something or out of doing something, it is usually the wrong answer.

You already know what is the right choice for you.

It may become "complicated"

This is Bacon Fryer 19. I got the Yahoo radio I told you about all opened up and it puts out over 140 watts at 15 VDC on any frequency. Got me a buyer at the local truck stop who will pay $1200. I told him if it has a problem, I can return it to Michigan…..

If I were You, I would keep it in the family.

No advise from here but some thoughts.

He or any other individual can purchase new or used from a business without any problem.
The radio is presently not modified.
You have no knowledge of his actual intent regarding illegal operation.
If not purchased from you then he will find somewhere else to get a unit.

I would back out of the transaction but that's just me. David

This is a case where "normally" the first person with cash wins. But if in doubt about the buyer, simply tell him/her that someone else's cash came in first. Problem solved.

Perhaps this radio is the nudge that the CB'er needs to get a ticket.  If you want to sell the radio and take his money, then do it.  If you don't sell it, he will just find another one.  You may have temporarily stopped a bad cb operator, or you might have just slowed a normal CB operator.  If you don't sell it you will have no money and you won't have encouraged a new ham.  I think once someone sees all the different bands available they would want to get a ticket because in my experience there isn't of CB handles on 40M.

The 11m mod takes out some functionality out of the rig. I think the automatic offsets for 2m and messes with 60m. Hate to see an $800 rig hacked into a CB.

Anyone can buy a ham rig or amplifier and make it cover 11 meters. I have a 150 Watt linear, that I bought at a ham fest. The amp covers 80-10 meters and it's no bigger than my HTX-100. The design came directly out of the old Motorola manuals. I can simply hook it up and use it. I could modify the HTX-100 to cover 11 meters as well, but 11 meters doesn't interest me. My IC-735 will also operate on 11 Meters.

What the purchaser will find out, if they implement the 11 meter modification, is that they no longer will be able to just select channel 1-40. They will have to know the frequency of each channel they operate on. Every time he/she changes channel, he/she will have to convert a channel number to a frequency. Maybe the memories could be programmed, but it will still complicate the operation. It's a waste to use such a capable radio on a small sliver of frequencies.

If the purchaser doesn't have any real experience modifying radios, there is a good chance the radio will never work again. And, wait till he/she finds out how much DC power the radio requires. His Radio Shack 3 amp supply isn't going to cut it.

With propagation on 10 and 11 meters being much the same thing, this may prompt him to get a ham license. It's very easy to adjust a 11 meter antenna for use on 10 meters.

Brian,

If you don't feel comfortable with the sale, and no money has changed hands, call it off.

I would humbly suggest that you don't get into an argument with the proposed buyer.  Suffice to say, you are clearly not comfortable with any alleged future operations of questionable legalities, so tell him that you do not want any part of same.  End discussion.

Don't worry, you'll find a buyer.

I still don't understand ham operator's obsession with CB'ers.

AH: CB'ers are good for CB channels, but when they buy, build, or modify ham gear for the extra power, or whatever, that's where the problem comes into play.

My objection would be that I sweat blood (practically) to get my tickets and I just naturally resent a non-ham buying his way into our fought-for bands.

Too much time and studying to let someone stomp on hallowed ground as they do. Of course, that's perhaps, only me!

Answer your question?

I think maybe you misunderstand the world of the CB operator. They use our 1500 watt amplifiers for drivers. Seriously.
CB'er down the road has a 3CX10000 and he is nowhere close to top of the hill. A IT tech I know drives a pair of 3CX3000's with a Clipperton L .

So, I just think you are worrying about water way, way over the dam.

But, if it bothers you then there is certainly no reason to sell it to a CB'er when there are plenty of others to buy it.

I would rather sell to a CBer and never hear back than to a ham who then tries a scam by switching in bad parts and Fleabay/PayPal will automatically give his money back and you now have a POS.
