But isn't an SDR that has reached the point in life when it will get no new updates just like a longtime traditional radio, ie a "hardware defined radio"?

Not by the definition of Software Defined Radio (SDR).  See various IEEE working group and official definitions.  Many old mobile phones aren't getting any new software updates, but hundreds of software engineers at Qualcomm wrote a zillion lines of code that were required to get their cellular radio SDR/modem chips to function well.

I agree with you.

I was just suggesting that an SDR with no further updates does resemble a hardware defined radio in one aspect:  that it will remain in that exact configuration for the remainder of its post-update life.  Yes the SDR remains software defined, but it no longer really matters if no more software becomes available at the end of support time (which was the original OP topic).

Sometimes third-party aftermarket updates do become available for SDR software, just as hardware mods were/are available for "HDR"s.
