Bent end fed wire
« on: May 31, 2021, 07:13:25 PM »

Hi,

I am planning to install a 41ft end fed antenna along the ceiling of my entertainment room. The dimensions are approx. 35ft by 15ft.

Question. So, basically, the end fed wire would be bent 90 degrees laterally along the ceiling. Would this work? I’ve read somewhere that as long as the wire is not bent back toward itself, it should still work...

Thank you.

Yes it will work if your tuner will make the transceiver happy on a given frequency. How efficient is another question. I don't think the 90 degree bend is a big concern in of itself. I see you are in apartments. Might want to look into a magnetic loop. There is a facebook group on those building them and you can buy them commercially. I have not ever used one but from what I read they have been good for apartment dwellers in several respects. Hope you find something that works well for you.

I see some sort of park next to you too. I would be thinking about outdoor portable work there. Perhaps an endfed in a tree. Would be fun and that way you could compare how your antenna setup inside is working vs outside. Possibly getting away from rfi around those apartments too. Outdoor radio is loads of fun.

I have about 50 feet in my 26 foot wide attic, actually it is bent around so that there are no angles less than 90 degrees and it works.  You have to find a way to use what you have available, even if it isn't the best possible scenario.  Would hanging it diagonally across the ceiling and let the few feet extra just hang down be a better alternative?

This would only be a WAG, Id say build and try it.

I've always favored 'Bens best bent wire' sent in Morse, with a bit of swing.

Bent wire as noted will work to the limits of compromise.

Biggest as its a nonresonant antenna is it MUSt have a counterpoise
and choking of the coax near the radio.  RF in the shack may be an issue.

Best answer is try it, try several things.

An end-fed antenna just below the ceiling will likely couple into any house wiring that happens to be above the ceiling, and thus be great at picking up RFI from household electronics, and sending EMI into them.  Might still work at lesser power levels, but be prepared to deal with those issues.
