Solderable Preformed Breadboard Jumper Wires
« on: June 05, 2021, 10:20:48 AM »

I have been breadboarding using solderless breadboards and preformed jumper wires.  I can buy protoboards that have the same hole pattern for more permanent applications.  However, when I move the jumper wires, from the solderless breadboard to a protoboard, I find that the wires are extremely hard to solder.  Does anyone know of a brand of these wires that is readily solderable?

You might look around old office buildings for abandoned cables where they used multi-pair cables to connect the multi-line phones in the old days.  Or maybe the local scrap yard will sell some cheap. The cable is usually  about a half inch diameter and is chock full of #22 AWG wire of decent grade. That's what I use for proto boards and jumpers on finished boards.

I really do not want to cut and strip wires.  Since I am already using the preformed jumper wires and I have fitted them to the breadboard/protoboard, I would like to be able to just transfer those wire.  So the issue is where to get preformed jumper wires that can be soldered.  When I try to solder the ones I have, the solder will not wick/adhere to the wires reliably even with added flux.

Some are too thick.
The wires in cat5 and cat6 cable works well also.

Gee,
I thought cutting and stripping wires were part of building electronic projects?
Besides, if it's an RF project, you don't want "formed wires" anyway. They will be unwanted inductance.

Cutting and stripping wire is NOT DIFFICULT.

EU: "I thought cutting and stripping wires were part of building electronic projects?"

Absolutely!! A large part of working with the circuitry is the cutting to length, stripping and soldering. (If only for neatness and  bragging rights! LOL)

A person should take pride in his work and that can be displayed in his wiring habits.  Precut wires tend to give a "spidery, helter-skelter" look to a job otherwise well done. {Except for the usual grasshoppers found in just about every hobby that couldn't bother to give a darn, of course.}

Back to the original question.  Does anyone know of wires, as described in the initial post, that are easily solderable?

One of the best investments I've made was to buy quality wire strippers and wire cutters. My first wire stripper purchase was in mid-1990's when I worked as a bench tech.

El Cheapo Chinese tools sometimes a bad investment.

if you insist on buying, and cant, hire someone to cut, strip, and bend for you at minimum wage

Wow this thread is bending reality!

I fail to see an issue here.  My plugboard/breadboard is typical.  I use 22ga solid hookup wire.  Tinned copper.  Requires stripping the insulation.  I don't solder plugboard wires!

These are solid copper:

Funny,  I use those preformed things for the white solderless proto boards...

I've also use them on plated hole per board, never had issues with
them taking solder.  Copper wire is copper wire, the plating is usually
silver or nickel both of which take solder well.

Conclusion is not the wire but the soldering (iron, solder, technique).

Allison,

Some of the kits are now supplied with aluminum wire. They cleverly mention that they are 'softer' for easier routing. Ahem...
