Mini Computer and SunSDR2 DX
« on: June 14, 2021, 05:11:09 AM »

I am in the market to replace my current computer with a more powerful one to use with my new SunSDR2 DX.
I am looking at a mini computer with an I5, 16 gb, 500 gb SSD, dual hdmi outputs, etc.
I'd be interested in hearing from someone who has a better understanding of the requirements, pro's and possible pitfalls. I know what Expert Systems says ExpertSDR software minimum requirements are but I would like a little overkill.
Thanks
Tim

Hi Tim,
I built my own from NewEgg. I went the AMD route and selected the 12 core (24 thread) Ryzen 3900X. I used ASRock motherboard with the M.2 hard drives. The only thing moving inside the case are CPU and case fans. I couldn't stay with Windows 7 with the newer Bios so I had to choose between Linux and Windows 10. I liked this combination so much I duplicated it on my internet computer. I could have gone with an Intel CPU but generic motherboards are available for both.

Its amazing how fast a new computer is, even a low end one.
A new I3 will blow away an older I7 because of the motherboard, memory type, and amount of cores the cpu has.
I bought a new I5 desktop and it runs the Anan and the airspy at the same time using 5% of the cpu.

It used to be the sdr pushed the computer a bit, but now days computers seem way beyond that.
Way beyond.

Thanks for the info, i like the idea of the mini computer for the size advantage. I've been told that it might suffer heat issues due to the load put on it by the SDR. I'm thinking that as N2DTS alluded to that the newer computers are working nearly as hard to operate SDR these days.
Thanks again

There is a video of a guy who runs an Elad fdm duo on an intel nark? a very small computer.
Many business use a very small computer as a workstation in sales settings, not a lot of ins and outs would be a limitation but I bet the system would run any sdr just fine.

I finally bought a mini computer and hooked it up to my SunSDR2 DX. It works great, with 2 separate receivers open on different bands and the 80mhz bands scope open the CPU load varies between 3 and 7 %, with just one receiver its between 1 and 2 %. The computer is a New Intel 4 Cores 8 Thread i5-8279U Processor(up to 4.1Ghz),Win10 Pro Beelink Mini , 16GB DRR4 ram, 512 GB SSD. I am very happy with it. it was $441 which I thought was a decent price. It is VERY small about 5 " square and maybe 2 " high. It runs cool so far and is very quiet. The small size makes installation a breeze.

Thanks for the suggestions and tips..
