If I'm on UHF/VHF using a repeater I just say " this is kd2hcu listening on (give frequency if someone is using scanner)"  if anyone wants to chat they'll answer.  I don't have any specific reason for doing it the way I do, just the way I was taught".  As for 146.52 being used for chatting, I believe there should be a frequency set aside for calling if a weak station is in need of help.

But if you have traffic on 146.52, don't you increase the likelihood that someone will actually hear that call for help because more stations are actually listening?

You make a very good point. "back in the day" when 2 meters had actual users, unlike today where it is difficult to scare up even a single contact, maybe you actually wanted a "calling frequency" because the traffic was so busy with so many conversations in progress or wanting to progress that you needed a "watering hole" and then the various conversations would QSY to other less used channels. But there is not much need for that now. Far better to have people chatting on 146.52 and if someone needs help they can break in.  I don't know about where you live, but here 2 meters is a vast wasteland, full of repeaters and devoid of people on them.

How many people know you can use 2m and above for simplex?
There's a sizeable crowd that thinks it is only for repeaters.

You can also use 10 and 6 meters for simplex FM.   It's an interesting question that you pose.  I can understand a new ham might not have accumulated the knowledge to know about simplex FM on the different bands.  There's no excuse for hams who have been around the hobby for a time.

If someone transmits they're "listening" aren't they actually talking?
I listen frequently but choose not to announce it.

Someone has to say something or everyone will be listening to dead air. I prefer monitoring to listening since I am not really listening to anything.

It’s still not as bad as the redundancy of saying your Callsign, followed by: FOR I.D.  🧐
