Connecting a Bencher to a 7300 and K1
« on: June 17, 2021, 03:16:17 AM »

I ran a cable from the BY-1 to both the 7300 and K1. With both cables plugged in the 7300 locks up. I end up unplugging the cable to what radio isn't being used.

Any idea how I can leave the cables plugged in all the time? If I keep unplugging and unplugging them the key jacks will eventually wear out.

Add a switch or some isolation diodes?

Make up a simple switchbox with a TPDT (triple pole, double throw) switch. If you are going to fab it up, make it nice with a jack for the bencher paddles and tails going out for the two rigs or even jacks on the box for the two rigs and then you can use standard cables with plugs off the shelf of any length needed. It is up to you.  If you have trouble finding the triple triple pole switch you can use the more common 4 pole double throw switch and just not use one terminal. All of this including the box should cost less than $20 and should not take more than a couple of hours to fab up a nice looking one.

Inexpensive RCA switch boxes for composite video/audio work well.

I strongly suspect that you could eliminate the need for switches by diode isolating the lines. Here is a quick sketch:

Any diodes that you have on hand should work fine in this application. The band on the diodes above indicate the cathode which is the common marking for diodes.

Either of Glenn's suggestions should work OK.  Personally I like the switch idea since it eliminates the possibility of accidently keying rig A when rig B is the one you want and is hooked into the proper antenna.  If you choose the diode option, there is a slight possibility that the voltage drop of a silicon diode of perhaps 0.7 volts is too much and the rig will not key reliably.  A Schottky diode, or even many germanium diodes will have much lower voltage drops.  I have only run into this problem one time, so not likely to happen.  Any of the 1N400x series of silicon diodes should work fine, and cost less than ten cents each.
