WSJTX keying radio No output FT991A
« on: June 17, 2021, 01:41:54 PM »

I know I am a pain in the rf but I have no where to turn first the program would not transmit and after some dorking around with the radio I got it to key on transmit then I had the problem with no band activity and now that is working now when the program keys the radio
and I can hear the relay and the radio goes quite and during this time I see no output even if I turn the power slide all the way up, I have an MFJ-870 SWR/Power Meter also a WavenodeWN-2n SWR / Power meter with two sensors one is just after the radio and before the Amp and one sensor on the Amp output going to the antenna and I show nothing on these gauges. Must be something that I have to turn on or off in the radio and as of now I have not found it. Why no transmit power??

Your audio settings are not right. Are you using Data U mode and have usb selected for the source. What are the audio settings in WSJT for audio??

Look at WSJT-X audio tab, what is the audio codec selected for the "speaker" ?  from the computers point of view the "speaker"  should be USB audio codec to send audio to the transmitter's input.  Keep in mind that windows updates can change this for you without your knowing it and also the windows levels can be reset for you without your knowledge from a windows update. So what was working fine before can now not be working at all. Just something you have to look out for.

FT8 14.074580  Data/USB

INPUT: Mic (2-usb audio Codec
Output speakers (2 usb audio codec
I am now showing 2 watts  with the radio set at 100W and at 50W I am showing .4 Watts. I need to read a bit more also I went into my settings and sound and shut down windows.
Where should the power slider be about the middle

I run the power slider on WSJT-x  wide open and control the audio level with in my case the audio input control of my Icom rigs. I can't remember if the 991a has an audio level control for the USB input or not. but you can use the windows speaker control for the USB audio codec. Make sure you understand which one your are adjusting, not the computer speakers (usually a Realtec device). You can adjust the windows speaker control for the USB audio codec until the power out of the rig with the rigs power control set at maximum starts to fall. When the power starts to fall off from maximum you know you are not overdriving the modulator input because by using this method, there isn't enough audio to develop full output power..

Now if you want to run less overall power output, then you can easily adjust down your power slider on wsjt-x to decrease power further. But if you run it all the way to the top you still know that you cannot overdrive your rig because you have adjusted the windows control so that full power cannot quite be achieved.  This is the easiest way I know to set these adjustments.

Of course windows update can easily "mess" with your adjustments.
