RADIO WEST
« on: July 01, 2021, 03:44:42 PM »

Anybody here old enough to remember a small outfit that sold antennas and other things catering to AM RADIO DXING ? (530-1700khz)  ? Called itself Radio West.

I bought one of their antennas long ago and the thing got broken and I stuffed it way. It consisted of ferrite bars connected together and some round inductor that fit over the unit that led to a pre-amplifier.

The thing was excellent at nulling out local ground wave signals. If you had a strong AM pest you could null it out. I don't recall anything since that did the job so good. I imagine it was somewhat effective at night but of coarse signals tend to come in from various directions.

I uncovered this thing recent and it seems the ferrite bars got all broken into pieces. It seems they were just maybe super-glued together. (not an expert on uses of super-glue). It was sold with no values of the parts which of coarse would tend to make people duplicate it easier.

Just pecking at peoples memory. Maybe somebody still has one ?

I had one of those antennas. It got me Radio Belize on MW with my Kenwood R-1000 in Detroit. BTW I had Radio West add a Collins mechanical filter to my R-1000 which made a huge difference.

If you poke around you may be able to replace those ferrite bars.

Here is the Radio West catalog which has a photo and description of the antenna. https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-DX/Miscellaneous/Radio%20West%20Catalog%201983.pdf

I have one of those. It was called the Shot Gun. It still works. I also have the Radio West Loop. This is a rotating ferrite antenna, which can be tilted and you could use also on LW and SW, by using different loop coils. Made by Grant Manning. Anybody knows where Grant Manning is These days?
PS. The radio West Loop uses a 9volt battery.

Sorry, I don't have what you're looking for but I certainly remember Radio West.
