"Mini Scope"
« on: July 06, 2021, 03:41:47 PM »

Has anyone purchased this little "Scope" from eBay?

STARTO Pocket-Size Digital Oscilloscope Kit 2.4" TFT 1Msps Open Source with Protective Case and Probe, Welded Version (Case Needs to be Assembled), Red

It, the board, comes fully assembled ,but the plexiglass case has to be fitted together. Herein lies the rub, no directions! A package of nuts and bolts and a bunch of pre-cut, paper covered plexiglass, one piece conveniently with a small break. (No problem, I think.)

Now, in our Pa winters we usually have a 500 to 1000 piece picture puzzle laid out on our dining room table and spend the winter putting it together. It's time consuming, but it's something to do between electronic projects. This unit is harder than any puzzle I've ever attempted to build!!

If there's a completed unit out there, could you email me a couple of pics to get me started on the assembly? (Front, sides, top and bottom.)

I thought a small scope like this could be a great "learning tool". (I feel smarter already!! LOL)

Charlie,

Scroll down to the reviews of it on Amazon and look at the pictures from Just_A_Reader. Start by carefully peeling of the protective paper. I find a sharp Exacto blade helps to lift a corner to get things started.

Those reviews remind me of the first $13 TransistorTestor kit I ordered on eBay, the ones with the socketed ATmega328 microcontroller, so I could easily update the software. Instead of the actual chip, the kit I received contained two IC sockets taped back-to-back with scotch tape. I went back to the vendor's site and looked at the photo, and sure enough, there were two IC sockets taped back-to-back (actually, pins-to-pins) and no IC!

The seller said I could return it and pay the shipping on a replacement, but it would be quicker if I just ordered it again! Right...

I ordered a couple of ATmega328P (programmable) from Mouser and built an AVR programmer and enjoyed the rest of the experience.

Glenn,
I find that I'm missing one of the plastic sheets. The pics show two with screen cutouts and I only have one of them so I'm wondering about mounting it in a case w/o the plastic. Have to figure it out. Gives me something to work on.

I would NOT recommend this unit!! The acrylic is too brittle.

I can't resist asking, but is it possible there are 2 screens and they are so close they are now stuck together?

I love to assembly something like that for the shack, but if its frustration, for get it.

No, I triple checked and I'm missing one with the cutout. I've ordered a box (case) for it and I'll just let it set until it gets here. It'll be fairly simple to do since I've got great templates to mark out the unit. LOL

On a trip downtown we stopped at the Salvation Army store and I found the case for my project ... a Handy Wipes container, complete with a spring loaded lid for mounting the scope onto. LOL

It fits nicely inside the lid with plenty of room for ??. I can keep it "buttoned up" until needed and tucked out of the way.

The problem??
I've never had an o'scope so consequently, it's all Greek to me. I've got to do some reading to find out what everything means.

(Oy Vey!!) Has my alligator mouth bitten off more than my canary bird butt can handle? I wonder.

WQA: The idea from the ad made me realize that I'd never done any scope work, so why not get it and play with it as a learning tool. (Besides, what a great chance to start another project!!

I've always loved the idea of putting something together, from the ground up, and having it work. It all started with a Filmore(?) crystal set that had my complete attention for about two weeks of lost sleep and went to a stage of amplification, etc, etc. I WAS HOOKED!

You've planted the seed in my head of those scopes you mentioned and I'll check it out. Who knows?? Hi.

While in Basic Training in 1951 at Fort Knox, my mother sent me a cartoon from our newspaper depicting a young lad being dragged away from his headphones while saying, "But, I think I heard something!!"
(How many times, in the middle of those two weeks with the crystal set, did dad turn on my light and make me go to sleep?? Oy Vey!! LOL)
