Ham in the making?
« on: July 09, 2021, 12:33:02 PM »

An interesting question, "Does anyone have a relative, friend, neighbor, that they know could be a radio builder, tinkerer, experimenter, ham? Preferably a "youngster with potential? (Hopefully someone that already has a start in that direction.)

Hi Charlie,
Man, I wish I did!

I am trying to interest my grandson (10 years old) in ham radio and electronics.  I taught him how to send his name, Ben, in CW and he was having a ball. I have him in the shack with me and show him how the whole world is at his fingertips with ham radio.  His father, my son, tells him it's a waste of time, because you can get on the Internet or use a cellphone!

That's my life in a nutshell; one step forward, two backwards!!

Jim, you're just going to have to take your son into the woodshed and show him who's the boss. ::) 8) ;D Thanks for the reply.

Judas Priest! 86 viewers and it looks like I might just be the last surviving member of a lost generation of electronic tinkerers!! Are we out of inquisitive youth? Perhaps the 'Cameras' have taken the fun out of electronics??  ... sad ...

You can thank Facebook and "Mobile Phone Social Media Addiction" for destroying ANY interest in youth doing ANYTHING other than having a cell phone surgically implanted on their face (even while driving).

Before the internet, facebook, and cell phones, there was really nothing much to do except get a hobby, build something with friends, study and learn some new hobby, etc.     But now, with cell phones glued to their face even in bed at night, where is the free time or interest to learn something new or have a hobby where you build something?  If you spent time doing that, you might miss some "Likes" on Facebook, or that critical must watch squirrel video.

When historians look back and try to analyze "The Second Fall of the Roman Empire", they will surely zero in on Facebook, cell phones, and their combined effect of sapping every ounce of energy and time from our society.
I would argue that Facebook alone has a larger negative impact on the GDP, than crop-dusting the entire population with tranquilizer gas.

My (very) short membership in Facebook only resulted in people posting outrageous, untrue junk on my Facebook page.  Not one person attempted to communicate with me on a friendly basis.  These Social Media are only for people who desire to get into shouting matches with people they don't even know.

As far as Twitter, and such.  forget it.

There's no doubt for me that you are both correct in your thinking. The electronics advancements have removed things like math and spelling from our schooling and only God knows what they've been replaced with. (I shudder to even consider the mental damage that's being done to our future generations.)

I'll wait and see if I can get a response, but it does look a bit futile at this point. ... sigh ...

Charlie,

You might try the building facet of ham radio.  That was my main interest and joy.

Al,

What do you mean? Add "Building" to my thread title?

I'm totally surprised at the lack of response as I'm a fanatic for the subject and, knowing what I do about it, makes me think (wish) that others might find it fascinating also. I don't believe that someone out of their teen, girls, cars period would, or could, be becoming interested in it so am leaning on the 'youth' of today to reply.

(Am I a hopeless amateur radio nut?) ... sigh ... Probably!

Too much "noise" on some of your threads Charlie, not worth my getting involved.

My eighteen-month-old granddaughter loves to sit at the shack desk. She tunes the 7300 around 20m, enjoying the different noises that come out of it and she sends Morse code (well, Morse babble) using the paddle. We set up a two-transistor multivibrator on a breadboard and her grandma showed her how different resistors changed the tone of the beep - but she's having some trouble with the maths of time-constants right now!

K3UIM:

Charlie, please excuse this bumbling old man.....I cut into this thread with my comment to the KE8G post...completely missing your initial post.

I felt his pain plus my blood pressure jumps 9db whenever the subject of these "cellphone zombies" is mentioned!

I apologize Charlie.  Oh one more thing...there is a difference between "tinkerers" and "builders!"   :D

The best builders are also tinkerers.

Martin,

Builders HAVE to be tinkers.  However I've known many tinkers who fix things but NEVER build anything!

I was suggesting switching ham radio facets to building something to give the kid the thrill of building something that works and he/she can play with.

I fear that homebrewing is a dying art, Martin.
