144mhz Eme station set up
« on: July 09, 2021, 06:32:22 PM »

Hi all, I was hoping to get some advice regarding my complex situation. At issue is after 18 months of not having a whole lot of luck or time I am really keen to get my 2m eme station going as I now finally have a little more time. I now have a lot of lovely kit but don’t want to blow up any of it, make the pc run the whole thing and integrate the 400 watt linear and LNA to run digital modes for eme.
The modes that seem to be best are jt65 and map65. All of this is extremely complicated and I would really appreciate any help.
Current status is that I have 2x 10 element xpols on 144.2mhz mounted with a g5500 alt/ el rotation I have 400 watts at the feed point and a decent mast mounted low noise 20+ db rx gain I have managed to get the elements on the Yagi aligned. I have the ic9700 and will be getting the 10mhz locked input to reduce drift. I have a decent sequencer on the way (HSQ5-EME/5V  Version 1.5) 2 600 watt relays) and a 144 - 146 MHz High Selectivity, High Q, Low Loss Bandpass Filter as I expect that there will be quite a bit of local noise.
The g5500 rotation system also has the  yaesu-gs-232a so I can run it with a computer. I am trying to keep the feed line as short as possible and have some half inch heliax but will invest in the 7/8 inch if it would make a big difference. The lines are about 50 feet long which is always going to be a lossy arrangement, although I could, on some days, run it from the base of the array.

Before the internet and long before digital modes, I had 8 - 9 element antennas on a huge home made tower, 20'crossmember, and both rotors were home brew. Only thing I ever heard was my own echo when I borrowed a Henry 2002 amplifier.

I was a tech and the nets were in the general portion, so I could only listen.

Much easier to do today.

But I was also on a hilltop, so I turned them down to the horizon and worked many stations on 2M SSB.

Good luck!

A friend is quite successful at EME with a 9700, 400W amp and 2 x 8 ele horizontal yagi antennas. He uses JT digital modes and an alt-azimuth rotator. Your setup looks to be similar.

However, I think his contacts are mostly “local” European stations with more elaborate installations than his.
