Recently, I offered my experience and advice to someone asking about features on a couple of radios he was considering. Actually, two detailed responses, as did four other people who gave their lengthy advice. It's been well over a week, and no acknowledgement that he read anything. I don't get it, but next time I'll let him fend for himself ;).

I've been on the other side of that "problem" myself.

I have asked for a solution and been given things to check out on the internet. Looking the suggestions up and spending a lot of time, (doubling back and forth more often than not,) I would work at doing as suggested, only to get entangled in more questions. Too many times 'giving up' looked like the only sensible course of action, but ... sigh ... LOL

I have even seen interesting threads from 1 or 2 years in the past and inquired as to the eventual outcome and ... ziltch.

(Of course, one must consider the SK possibilities.) :(

Whether the suggestions panned out or not isn't the point. You asked a question and people tried to help to the best of their ability. I'm sure you responded and acknowledged receipt of their posts. I think that all people would like is a little common courtesy, letting them know they didn't waste their time.

I'd hate to think that after someone read my suggestion, they immediately keeled over with a heart attack and couldn't respond :o.

Robert, you certainly have a way with words!! LOL

As far as I remember, I did get back to the replies. In fact, I believe I've re/learned more from Eham's replys than I knew before my exodus of many years!! I'm amazed at the many helpings I've received here! Once in a while a 'trolling' remark, but that's to be expected, I guess.

So many times I've asked a "tongue-in-cheek" question, fully expecting to be ridiculed for such a 'basic' question, only to receive several very informative answers.

At my age, it isn't easy to digest complicated subjects without feeling like a complete numb nut for even having to ask. But, thank Heavens, there's always an answer. It's just the mental labor of absorbing (and retaining) the references!! LOL)

Charlie,

I'm not as old as you, but I'm getting up there (75), been a ham for 62 years. Originally also a K3 from Philadelphia (K3JIV) before moving to AZ, and changed to my present call. But never having had a technical vocation, I still learn something all the time regarding ham radio. I believe that there is no such thing as a stupid question (well, unless it's something like "where do you screw the antenna coax on an Icom 7300" ::)). But I've seen tons of admonishments from some of the holier-than-thou "experts" on the various forums. Usually they're electronic engineers. But fortunately the overwhelming majority are truly trying to be helpful.

However, I believe there's no excuse for posing a question and not acknowledging those that answer. Unless it's "RTFM, dummy", where the answer is not so obvious.

Well, I live by what an early boss once told me..."You can't go home until you learn at least 1 new thing each day." And it is true, there is always something to be learned in anything you do. And if you have any desire to become a better person, you look for the challenge to learn something. Sometimes I learn things that are different from what I thought I knew. The idea here is that you learn.

And even if the person asking the question does not respond, others can still learn from the information presented.

What is the thinking behind posting a question to a forum when the answer is easily found by using your search engine?  Sure if you have gone the search engine route and still have not found the answer by all means try a forum.   God helps those who help themselves.

Not everyone is internet savvy and able to filter through a million pages that things like Google suggest. Or maybe in the way they ask the question leads them down a wrong information path. Or maybe they still believe in Hams helping Hams as a part of HR.

So the "why" they come here and ask is not the point. Hopefully getting an answer is the point.

I guess there would be no "internet savvy" required to find your way to this site and post a question.  Everyone is entitled to an opinion...thanks for yours.

Yeah but...its more likely the OP was a hit and run to get an answer and never looked back. Courtesy isnt taught in union run teachers schools.
