You're right about those Rotarys.  I was at one meeting where if anyone said anything that the president did not agree, they were immediately fined $20-- with no appeal and no argument.  (Leave me out)

Thank you for that insight! I was asked to join a local rotary. Glad I didn't!

How do they keep members in a club like that..?

I was not a Rotary Club member.  Back in 1952 I was a college student and worked part-time.  My employer was a Rotary member, and also a fine pianist.  He invited me to a meeting to play a violin solo, with him accompanying on piano.  I only observed at one meeting.

The answer is 0.01 uF.  Now, what was the question?
Mine must have drifted over the years, it now measures .007 uF. :(

Nobody has guessed the secret question yet?
Is there a prize for getting it right , other than having to answer it?   :o ::) :-\

With the question being so secretive, I'm not inclined to answer it unless there is a large sum of money involved.

This is not directed at anyone in particular but I support those that discounted my question to feel better about themselves so they will not have to crack on me. It is ineffective on me as I was in Rotary for 10 years and President for 1. Our club is notorious for no mercy given.

I'm not discounting your question, but it would be nice if you told us what you're looking for.  You'll get less grief that way.

I have never owned an S-38 in any variety, nor have I ever been a member of the Rotary Club.  I gave you a link to the manual, so other than telling you to RTFM, that is the best I can do.  We can't help you unless you give us an idea of what you need.

Wow - this is better than "What's it worth?" without pictures or a model number!

...and you will find this kind of thread quite often right here on good ol' Eham!  ;D
I find it therapeutic to have a mindless entertainment diversion when things get tough at work.

I stay with this thread only because I'm anxious to offer a useful solution to the problem.  Now, the S-38 isn't a very complicated radio, so the problem and its answer can't be very complicated.  I think I could handle it.

Trying hard to "claim the prize", eh?
Good luck! It might be easier to win the Powerball lottery!

QVK: If you could show a picture of the problem, or a description of the problem, I'm sure an answer will be forthcoming.
Good luck on whatever it might be.

Some time ago, I restored an S-38, which included building a separate box containing an isolation transformer with plugs and sockets.  But the S-38 would not make a CW tone.  It uses a hokey feedback scheme where a wire is brought near the I.F. amp to give some capacitive-coupled positive feedback. No matter how I adjusted this "magic" cable, it wouldn't oscillate.

I don't really care to fix it.  I will never actually use this receiver for anything.  These things are selling for about $40 for a clean one.  Not worth advertising it and having to box it up and take it to UPS.
